چکیده
In 30 ambulatory patients (14 men and 16 women), with diabetes mellitus (7 of type I and 23 of type II) of variable duration and with ages averaging 52.2 years, the degree of retinal microan giopathy was assessed along with the erythrocyte filtration rate (FR) and the percentage of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA,). The FR was significantly (p < 0.001) lower among the diabetics (12.09 ± 2.71 JAI sec-I) than in the controls (15.80 ± 1.75). On the other hand, the level of HbA1 was significantly (p < 0.001) higher in the diabetics (12.26 ± 3.83) than in the control group (7.97 ± 1.47). The severity of the diabetic retinopathy was estimated as follows: degree Tin 10 patients, degree II in 10 patients al so, degree III in 4 patients and no abnormalities in 6 individuals. Among the patients the retinal lesions were significantly correlated (r = -0.46, p < 0.01) with the value of FR but were not affected by the level of HbA,. No significant correlation was detec ted between FR and HbA,. Our results suggest that, as a consequence of the metabolic abnormalities present in the diabe tics, the non-enzymatic glycosylation of hemoglobin A is increased. The rise of erythrocyte rigidity, while hampering blood-flow through already injured microvessels, could contribute to the development of retinal abnormalities irrespective of the HbA, le vel. Consequently, the abnormalities in the retinal microcirculation could, directly or indirectly, influence red cell filtrability, worsening the rheologic behaviour in the local microvessels.

The assessment of erythrocyte deformability by filtration rate.
The aim of the study was to monitor the erythrocyte deformability as one of important factors securing the appropriate tissues perfusion in healthy subjects and diabetic patients with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Erythrocyte deformability was determined by the method of filtration and centrifugation, and the erythrocyte filtrability was calculated as a percentage of filtered erythrocyte...
متن کاملErythrocyte filtrability and oxyhemoglobin dissociation in hypertensive patients.
Twenty one patients with essential hypertension were studied. A significant decrease (p < 0.05) of hemoglobin oxygen affinity and a marked reduction (p < 0.001) of erythrocyte filtrability was detected. The results suggest an abnormality of the erythrocyte deformability in the microcirculation of the hypertensive patients, which implies a shift to the right of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation cur...
متن کاملBlood filtrability in cerebrovascular disorders, with special reference to erythrocyte deformability and ATP content.
Erythrocyte deformability was determined in 48 patients with cerebrovascular disease and 116 healthy controls as an index of blood filtrability in microcirculation. Hemo-rheological and blood chemical changes were also studied to assess their effect on filtrability. Erythrocyte deformability, determined by Reid's method, was expressed as the deformability index (DI). DI and ATP levels decreased...
متن کاملMicroviscosity of erythrocyte membrane in hypertensive patients.
Twenty eight ambulatory patients (16 men and 12 women), suffering from essential hyperten sion, whose ages averaged 46.9 ± 9.6 years, were studied; the patients presented blood pressure values of 174.0 ± 22.7 mmHg systolic and 110.5 ± 11.7 mmHg diastolic. It was detected a signifi cant rise of erythrocyte membrane microviscosity (p < 0.01) and a significant decrease of eryth rocyte filtrability...
متن کاملMicrovascular abnormalities in capillaroscopy correlate with higher serum IL-18 and sE-selectin levels in patients with type 1 diabetes complicated by microangiopathy.
Microvascular abnormalities are one of the most important causes of persistent diabetic complications. The aim of this study was to compare microvascular changes examined by nailfold capillaroscopy with serum concentrations of soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin) and IL-18 in type 1 diabetic patients with and without microangiopathy. Serum levels of sE-selectin and IL-18 were determined by an enzym...
