چکیده

A threshold counter is a shared data structure that assumes integer values It provides two operations Increment changes the current counter value from v to v while Read returns the value bv wc where v is the current counter value and w is a xed constant Thus the Read operation returns the approximate value of the counter to within the constant w Threshold counters have many potential uses including software barrier synchronization Threshold networks are a class of distributed data structures that can be used to construct highly concurrent low contention implementations of shared threshold counters In this paper we give the rst proof that any threshold network construction of a threshold counter can be extended to support a Decrement operation that changes the counter value from v to v

Threshold Counters with Increments a Decrements

A threshold counter is a shared data structure that assumes integer v ues. It provides two operations: Increment changes the current counter val from v to v+1, while Read returns the value bv=wc, where v is the curre counter value and w is a fixed constant. Thus, the Read operation retur the “approximate” value of the counter to within the constant w. Thresho counters have many potential uses, ...

In-Place Binary Counters

We introduce a binary counter that supports increments and decrements in O(1) worst-case time per operation. (We assume that arithmetic operations on an index variable that is stored in one computer word can be performed in O(1) time each.) To represent any integer in the range from 0 to 2−1, our counter uses an array of at most n bits plus few words of dlg(1 +n)e bits each. Extended-regular an...

Supporting Increment and Decrement Operations in Balancing Networks

Counting networks are a class of distributed data structures that support highly concurrent implementations of shared Fetch&Increment counters. Applications of these counters include shared pools and stacks, load balancing, and software barriers [4, 12, 13, 18]. A limitation of counting networks is that the resulting shared counters can be incremented, but not decremented. A recent result by Sh...

On the search for an appropriate metric for reaction time to suprathreshold increments and decrements

Weber contrast, DeltaL/L, is a widely used contrast metric for aperiodic stimuli. Zele, Cao & Pokorny [Zele, A. J., Cao, D., & Pokorny, J. (2007). Threshold units: A correct metric for reaction time? Vision Research, 47, 608-611] found that neither Weber contrast nor its transform to detection-threshold units equates human reaction times in response to luminance increments and decrements under ...
