The Science of Mentation

چکیده

By mentation I mean the totality of the conscious and subconscious adaptive functionings of a living organism. Bio-psychology is that department of the science of mentation which studies organic structures and their environments in order to determine the relations which exist between these and the mentations which accompany them. It studies such structures and environments which nature provides and so far its method is that of observation, but it also artificially varies organic structures and environments, and to that extent its method is experimental. As experimental bio-psychology, it varies structure to determine function; and its scope includes three great sciences: 1. Biologic Psychology, which is that department of the science of mentation wherein our knowledge of mind is obtained by a scientific study of (A) organisms and their anatomical and molecular structures as exhibited by nature, and as varied by definite experimental conditions artificially produced; and by a study of (B) the cosmic environment of such organisms as exhibited in nature, and as varied by definite experimental conditions and also by a study of (C) the mentations of organisms as exhibited in nature in environments that have not been artificially disturbed, and as exhibited under the definite experimental conditions of organism and environment before mentioned. In other words, this science studies the individual organism as one factor in producing mentation of a definite

Partial REM-sleep deprivation increases the dream-like quality of mentation from REM sleep and sleep onset.

STUDY OBJECTIVES Sleep onset (SO) is cognitively and physiologically similar to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, supporting the notion that REM sleep-related processes are 'covertly' active at this time. The objective was to determine if SO mentation is sensitive to REM sleep deprivation. DESIGN Two-group cross-sectional design; sleep recordings for 3 nights. SETTING Standard sleep laborator...

A test of the somnolent mentation theory and the cognitive shuffle insomnia treatment

Insomnia affects about 33% of Americans according to Harvey & Tang (2003) who called for new cognitive treatments. We will report preliminary results from a test of (a) the Somnolent Mentation theory (SMT) of sleep onset (SO) and (b) a new cognitive treatment for insomnia, the cognitive shuffle (CS), derived from the SMT (Beaudoin, 2013, 2014). According to SMT, incoherent mentation characteris...

A design-based approach to sleep-onset and insomnia: Super-somnolent mentation, the cognitive shuffle and serial diverse imagining

This paper describes an approach to sleep onset (SO) and insomnia that involves a broad, design-based theory of cognition and affect (H-CogAff, Sloman, 2003). It proposes that the SO Control System (SOCS) has somnolent and insomnolent mentation inputs. A disruption of situational awareness and temporal sense making is posited to be somnolent. Perturbance (tertiary emotion) and primary emotions ...

A review of mentation in REM and NREM sleep: "covert" REM sleep as a possible reconciliation of two opposing models.

Numerous studies have replicated the finding of mentation in both rapid eye movement (REM) and nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. However, two different theoretical models have been proposed to account for this finding: (1) a one-generator model, in which mentation is generated by a single set of processes regardless of physiological differences between REM and NREM sleep; and (2) a two-genera...

REM and NREM Sleep Mentation Differences: A Question of Story Structure?

Dreaming is an expression of vivid imagery with a seemingly storylike structure (1-3). Early observations (4,5) temporally linked vivid dreaming with REM sleep, an association which many took to be an exclusive one (e.g., 6-8). However, when the definition of dreaming was expanded to include more general forms of cognition (9), more serious consideration was given to the notion that dreaming is...
