New Directions in Spoken Dialogue Technology for Pervasive Interfaces

Spoken dialogue technology has emerged over the past decade as a challenging area for researchers in artificial intelligence, speech and language processing, and humancomputer interaction. At the same time a number of leading players in the computing industry have been looking seriously at the commercial potential of interactive spoken and multimodal systems. This paper considers the challenges posed for researchers and developers of spoken dialogue systems and the new directions that the technology is likely to take within the next few years, particularly with respect to new types of application, such as pervasive and mobile speech systems, that involve different interaction paradigms from those used in traditional spoken dialogue systems.
