Athermal and Isothermal Martensitic Transformations Induced at Room Temperature by Ultra High Magnetic Field

چکیده
Effects of ultra high magnetic field of both pulse and steady types on martensitic transformation have been studied, using Fe-Ni-Mn, Fe-Ni-Mn-C alloys with the supplemental tests on Fe-Ni-C and Fe-NiCo-Ti alloys. It is found that the martensitic transformation is induced at room temperature not only athermally but also isothermally either by pulse magnetic field or by steady magnetic field for Fe-Ni-Mn and Fe-x-Ivlh-C alloys. This fact is in sharp contrast with that no martensite is induced by ultra high magnetic field for Fe-Ni-C and Fe-Ni-Co-Ti alloys.

We have recently constructed a phenomenological theory that provides a unified explanation for athermal and isothermal martensitic transformation processes. On the basis of this theory, we predict some properties of martensitic transformation and confirm them experimentally using some Fe-based alloys and a Ni-Co-Mn-In magnetic shape memory alloy.

Magnetic field-induced, reversible martensitic transformations in NiCoMnIn meta-magnetic shape memory alloys were studied under constant and varying mechanical loads to understand the role of coupled magneto-mechanical loading on the transformation characteristics and the magnetic field levels required for reversible phase transformations. The samples with two distinct microstructures were test...
متن کاملThermally Activated Martensite: Its Relationship to Non-Thermally Activated (Athermal) Martensite
The classification of martensitic displacive transformations into athermal, isothermal or anisothermal is discussed. Athermal does not mean “no temperature dependence” as is often thought, but is best considered to be short for the notion of no thermal activation. Processes with no thermal activation do not depend on time, as there is no need to wait for sufficient statistical fluctuations in s...
متن کاملIsothermal martensitic transformation in metamagnetic shape memory alloys
We show that in metamagnetic shape memory alloys exhibiting a magnetostructural first order phase transition the direct transition from ferromagnetic austenite to nonmagnetic martensite is isothermal. In contrast to the direct transformation, the reverse one nonmagnetic martensite–ferromagnetic austenite is athermal, just as are athermal both direct and reverse martensitic transformations in co...
