Fermi edge singularities in ion-induced electron emission from plane metal surfaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
Auger electron emission – following low energy monoatomic ion impact on metal surfaces – is studied with a many body theory that includes both the band structure and the Fermi singular response of metal electrons (to the sudden neutralization of the projectiles). Application is made to the experimental kinetic energy distributions of electrons ejected from polycrystalline Al by Ar-projectiles at varying incident energies and angles. Excellent agreement is found between the theory and the measurements. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 79.20.Rf; 34.50.Dy; 34.70.+e; 71.10. w

First-principles calculation of field emission from metal surfaces
The field-emission current from realistic metal surfaces is evaluated within the density-functional theory using the Landauer-Büttiker approach. The electronic density in the surface region and the potential barrier induced by the finite electric field are calculated self-consistently using a Green’s-function embedding scheme and the full-potential linearized-augmented plane-wave method. Applic...
متن کاملAbsence of Fermi-level pinning at cleaved nonpolar InN surfaces.
Prior experimental work had found that the Fermi level at InN growth surfaces is pinned well above the conduction band edge, leading to strong surface band bending and electron accumulation. Using cross-sectional scanning photoelectron microscopy and spectroscopy, we show definitive evidence of unpinned Fermi level for in situ cleaved a-plane InN surfaces. To confirm the presence or absence of ...
متن کاملOn the Stability of the Neutral Meson
' 'N the accompanying letter by Germer and Haworth, ~ evidence is presented to show that a positive ion in a high field (~107 volts/cm) must be able to eject several electrons from a metal. On the other hand, present theories of ejection by positive ions in low fields require that the ion be neutralized as the first step in the ejection process and, hence, that an ion be unable to eject more th...
متن کاملUltrafast strong-field photoelectron emission from biased metal surfaces: exact solution to time-dependent Schrödinger Equation
Laser-driven ultrafast electron emission offers the possibility of manipulation and control of coherent electron motion in ultrashort spatiotemporal scales. Here, an analytical solution is constructed for the highly nonlinear electron emission from a dc biased metal surface illuminated by a single frequency laser, by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation exactly. The solution is valid...
متن کاملCommutation technique for an exciton photocreated close to a metal
Recently, we have derived the changes in the absorption spectrum of an exciton when this exciton is photocreated close to a metal. The resolution of this problem – which has similarities with Fermi edge singularities – has been made possible by the introduction of “exciton diagrams” in which the exciton metal-electron vertex has been essentially guessed. The validity of this procedure relied on...
