چکیده

Development of efficient means for the recovery of valuable resources from solid waste materials is a critical requirement for future Advanced Life Support (ALS) systems that will be needed to support long-duration manned mission in space. Of particular importance are technologies that may be employed in hypogravity and microgravity environments. Currently three solid waste processing technologies, including supercritical water oxidation (SCWO), microwave powered combustion and fluidized bed incineration, have been tested for the conversion of solid waste. However, none of these technologies are compatible with microgravity or hypogravity operating conditions. To meet these needs, Gradient Magnetically Assisted Stabilized Bed (G-MASB) technology is under development to serve as an operating platform for fluidized bed operations in the space environment. The G-MASB technology has been specifically tailored for microgravity, hypogravity and variable gravity operating conditions. The operation of GMASB was successfully tested in two series of zero-g flight experiments on board NASA's KC-135 aircraft. In this paper, we present a mathematical model describing the filtration of micron-sized solid waste particles from a liquid stream. This model is compared with experimental results obtained in the G-MASB while operated at 1g. The experimental data are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Magnetically assisted liquid–solid fluidization in normal and microgravity conditions: experiment and theory

The application of an external magnetic field on a fluidized bed of ferromagnetic particles is well known in a conventional two-phase, gas–solid or liquid–solid fluidization. The external magnetic field significantly changes the fluidized bed fluid-dynamic behavior and if creatively used may enhance the bed performance. In this paper, a theoretical fluid-dynamic model describing behavior of a G...

A New and Efficient Method for the Adsorption and Separation of Arsenic Metal Ion from Mining Waste Waters of Zarshouran Gold Mine by Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction with Modified Magnetic Nanoparticles

Widespread arsenic contamination of mining wastewater of Zarshouran (West Azerbaijan province) has led to a massive epidemic of arsenic poisoning in the whole of surrounding areas. It is estimated that approximately all agriculture fields are being irrigated with the water that its arsenic concentrations elevated above the World Health Organization’s standard of 10 parts per billion. A novel ad...

Suitability assessment for handling methods of municipal solid waste

Solid waste management is challenging in Phnom Penh city, Capital of Cambodia. The only one formal treatment taken is the final disposal of mixed waste into an open dumpsite. The current study analyses the physical and chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste disposed of in the dumpsite to assess their suitable handling methods. The current study found that the major compositions of wa...
