Light sterile neutrinos have been introduced as an explanation for a number of oscillation signals at Ám 2 $ 1 eV 2. Neutrino oscillations at relatively short baselines provide a probe of these possible new states. This paper describes an accelerator-based experiment using neutral current coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering to strictly search for active-to-sterile neutrino oscillations. This experiment could, thus, definitively establish the existence of sterile neutrinos and provide constraints on their mixing parameters. A cyclotron-based proton beam can be directed to multiple targets, producing a low-energy pion and muon decay-at-rest neutrino source with variable distance to a single detector. Two types of detectors are considered: a germanium-based detector inspired by the SuperCDMS design and a liquid argon detector inspired by the proposed CLEAR experiment.

متن کاملNeutrino flavor conversion in a neutrino background : single - versus multi - particle description
In the early Universe, or near a supernova core, neutrino flavor evolution may be affected by coherent neutrino-neutrino scattering. We develop a microscopic picture of this phenomenon. We show that coherent scattering does not lead to the formation of entangled states in the neutrino ensemble and therefore the evolution of the system can always be described by a set of one-particle equations. ...

Recently the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) has measured both the rates as well as the day-night asymmetries in the flux of neutrinos from the Sun in the charged-current (CC), neutral-current (NC) and elastic scattering (ES) channels. Motivated by the small but negative daynight asymmetry in the NC channel at SNO (1.2 standard deviations away from zero), we consider whether such a non-zero ...
متن کاملPrecise Ratios for Neutrino-Nucleon and Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions
It is shown that several ratios of neutral to charged current cross sections are determined accurately, because the largest contribution is determined by isospin symmetry and the smaller terms are estimated from data or theoretical calculations. This way the theoretical uncertainty is very small. It is further discussed that the ratios can be measured at various distances from the origin of the...
