چکیده

The inverse statistics is the distribution of waiting times needed to achieve a predefined level of return obtained from (detrended) historic asset prices [1, 2]. Such a distribution typically goes through a maximum at a time coined the optimal investment horizon, τ ρ , which defines the most likely waiting time for obtaining a given return ρ. By considering equal positive and negative levels of return, we reported in [2] on a quantitative gain/loss asymmetry most pronounced for short horizons. In the present paper, the inverse statistics for 2/3 of the individual stocks presently in the DJIA is investigated. We show that this gain/loss asymmetry established for the DJIA surprisingly is not present in the time series of the individual stocks nor their average. This observation points towards some kind of collective movement of the stocks of the index (synchronization).

Inverse Statistics for Stocks and Markets

In recent publications, the authors have considered inverse statistics of the Dow Jones Industrial Averaged (DJIA) [1, 2, 3]. Specifically, we argued that the natural candidate for such statistics is the investment horizons distribution. This is the distribution of waiting times needed to achieve a predefined level of return obtained from detrended historic asset prices. Such a distribution typ...

Horizon sensitivity of the inflation hedge of stocks

In this paper, we study the potential of stocks as a hedge against inflation for different investment horizons. We show that stocks can be a hedge against inflation even if stock returns are negatively correlated with unexpected inflation shocks, and only moderately positively related to expected inflation. Depending on the investment horizon, the optimal hedge ratio can be either positive or n...

Investment Horizon Effects

Boudry and Gray (2003) have documented that the optimal buy-and-hold demand for Australian stocks is not necessarily increasing in the investment horizon when returns are predictable. Such finding is in contrast with Barberis (2000) who shows that positive monotonic horizon effects predominate for US stocks. Using a closed-form approximation to the asset allocation problem, this paper relates t...

Optimal Investment Horizon Tehran Price Index (Tepix) and Its Comparison with Indices of Automotive, Sugar, Pharmaceutical, Financial and Banking Industries

In the analysis of the stock market and its market indices, instead of estimating returns and their distributions at a given time interval, it is possible to extract optimal time to achieve a certain return. In this study, the distribution of investment horizons and optimal investment horizons through inverse gamma statistics method for the indices of automobile, sugar, pharmaceutical, financia...

The term structure of the risk-return tradeoff

Recent research in empirical finance has documented that expected excess returns on bonds and stocks, real interest rates, and risk shift over time in predictable ways. Furthermore, these shifts tend to persist over long periods of time. In this paper we propose an empirical model that is able to capture these complex dynamics, yet is simple to apply in practice, and we explore its implications...
