Fabrication of Three-dimensional Microstructures Using Capillary Forces

چکیده
In this paper we describe the fabrication of threedimensional microstructures by means of capillary forces. Using an origami-like technique, planar structures are folded to produce 3D-objects. To this purpose use is made of capillary interactions and surface tension forces. Capillarity is a particularly effective mechanism since it becomes dominant at small scales (where surface tension forces dominate over bulk forces), the process benefits therefore from miniaturization. Planar microstructures of silicon nitride of various geometries with lateral dimensions of about 100 μm and thickness 1 μm and thin hinges for rotation, have been fabricated. Preliminary experiments in which liquid drops are deposited on these structures show that mechanical bending forces can be overcome and that folding out-of-plane can be realized. Capillary folding is therefore shown to be a very promising technique to fabricate 3D microand nanostructures.

Micro-stereolithography ( SL) is capable of fabrication of highly complex three-dimensional (3D) microstructures by selectively photo-induced polymerization from the monomer resin. In this work, a theoretical model is developed to analyze the deflection and a...
متن کاملThree dimensional metal pattern transfer for replica molded microstructures
We report a replica molding process for simultaneously forming a three dimensional metal pattern on the surface of molded polymer microstructures. This technique uses noncovalent surface forces to guide the transfer of thin metal films from the three dimensional features of high aspect ratio poly dimethylsiloxane micromolds to polymeric replicates. The utility of this technique has been demonst...

In the microfabrication processes, it is necessary to examine the quality of the structures to ensure the whole process runs smoothly. However, the examination process of pattern defects is interrupted during the fabrication of high-aspect-ratio microstructures. The inevitable pattern defects arise from capillary forces which occur during the liquid drying process. In this paper, a new method t...

Self-assembly is a promising technique to overcome fundamental limitations with integrating, packaging, and general handling of individual electronic-related components with characteristic lengths significantly smaller than 1 mm. Here we describe the use of magnetic and capillary forces to self-assemble 280 μm sized silicon building blocks into interconnected structures which approach a three-d...

Scalable and cost effective patterning of polymer structures and their surface textures is essential to engineer material properties such as liquid wetting and dry adhesion, and to design artificial biological interfaces. Further, fabrication of high-aspect-ratio microstructures often requires controlled deep-etching methods or high-intensity exposure. We demonstrate that carbon nanotube (CNT) ...
