چکیده

We report the discovery of two new ZZ Ceti pulsators, LP 133−144 and HE 1258+0123, selected on the basis of model atmosphere fits to optical spectroscopic data. The atmospheric parameters for LP 133−144, Teff = 11, 800 ± 200 K and log g = 7.87 ± 0.05, and for HE 1258+0123, Teff = 11, 410 ± 200 K and log g = 8.04 ± 0.05, place them within the empirical boundaries of the ZZ Ceti instability strip. This brings the number of known ZZ Ceti stars to a total of 36, a quarter of which have now been discovered using the spectroscopic approach for estimating their atmospheric parameters. This method has had a 100% success

PG 1541 + 650 : A new ZZ Ceti white dwarf ?

We report the discovery of a new pulsating DA white dwarf, or ZZ Ceti, from the list of the Palomar-Green survey, rediscovered in the ongoing Hamburg Quasar survey (HQS). PG1541+650 is one of the ZZ Ceti candidates listed in the analysis of 80 DA white dwarfs from the HQS. With an effective temperature of 12000 K, for a surface gravity logg=7.79, it lies in the ZZ Ceti instability strip. It is ...

Discovery of seven ZZ Ceti stars using a new photometric selection method

We report the detection of non-radial g-mode oscillations in seven relatively bright (14.4 < B < 16.5) DA white dwarf stars from time-series photometry collected at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) at Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, Spain. The candidate variable stars were selected from preparatory photometric observations of objects from the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS) and from spectrosc...

Pulsating or not ? A search for hidden pulsations below the red edge of the ZZ Ceti instability strip ⋆

The location of the red edge of the ZZ Ceti instability strip is defined observationally as being the lowest temperature for which a white dwarf with a H-rich atmosphere (DA) is known to exhibit periodic brightness variations. Whether this cut-off in flux variations is actually due to a cessation of pulsation or merely due to the attenuation of any variations by the convection zone, rendering t...

An analysis of DA white dwarfs from the Hamburg Quasar Survey

Follow-up spectroscopy of several hundred hot stars detected by the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS) has been carried out between 1989 and 1996. We present the analysis of 80 DA white dwarfs using model atmospheres and theoretical cooling tracks to derive the atmospheric parameters Teff and log g, masses and absolute magnitudes. The HQS turned out to be sensitive to the detection of hydrogen-rich wh...

HST Spectra of GW Librae: A Hot Pulsating White Dwarf in a Cataclysmic Variable

We have obtained Hubble Space Telescope UV spectra of the white dwarf in GW Lib, the only known non-radially pulsating white dwarf in a cataclysmic variable, and the first known DAZQ variable. The UV light curve reveals large amplitude (10%) pulsations in the UV with the same periods (646, 376 and 237 s) as those seen at optical wavelengths, but the mean spectrum fits with an average white dwar...
