Tool support for formal methods

Although the potential users of theorem proving systems are numerous, automated theorem provers are less widely used than they might be in the formal methods community. Many proofs of correctness, of both software and hardware, have been carried out by skilled users, but in an ideal world all programs would be proved correct before use; in practice few software developers other than those engaged in safety-critical applications make use of Formal Methods. Of those that do, many concentrate on formal specification and do not carry the process through to locating and discharging proof obligations. Finally, many of those who do proofs carry these out by hand – a time consuming process.
