چکیده

Objective: Impairment to hearing during childhood may lead to delay in the speech and language skills, making the communication process more difficult. Early identification and rehabilitation can benefit the children. It is necessary to test the hearing using accurate test procedures. Thus, aim of the study was to compare the use of probe tones (226Hz and 1000Hz probe tone) in tympanometry while testing the neonates for hearing before getting discharged from hospital setup. Method: An inclusion exclusion criteria was applied in selection of 60 neonates (1-17days). Hearing screening with comparison of 226Hz and 1000Hz probe tone in tympanometry was carried out using a comparative study design. Pressure ranging from + 200 to -400 daPa and a pressure change rate of 600/200 daPa per second was used for testing. Intensity of probe tone was adjusted at 85 dB SPL. Comparison was made for type of tympanogram, ear canal volume, compensated static peak acoustic admittance and tympanometric peak pressure. Sampled paired t test was used to carry out statistical analysis. Results: 1000Hz probe tone surpassed the 226Hz probe tone in testing the neonates using tympanometry. A statistically significant difference was observed in all the sub-sections except similar values for ear canal volume. Conclusion: Many changes occur in the ears of neonates like changes in bone density, mesenchymal loss which has an impact on the mechanical properties of the auditory canal and middle ear system. Thus, 1000Hz probe tone in tympanometry serves a promising tool.

Tympanometry in neonates with normal otoacoustic emissions: measurements and interpretation.

UNLABELLED Tympanometry is used in evaluating middle ear functional conditions. Before six months of age its results may be misleading. High frequency studies aim to provide more valid procedures. AIM To describe and discuss tympanometric measurements and the interpretation in normal hearing neonates at 226, 678 and 1000Hz. METHOD 110 neonates that were analyzed had normal otoacoustic emiss...

High-frequency (1000 Hz) tympanometry in normal neonates.

The characteristics of high frequency (1000 Hz) acoustic admittance results obtained from normal neonates were described in this study. Participants were 170 healthy neonates (96 boys and 74 girls) aged between 1 and 6 days (mean = 3.26 days, SD = 0.92). Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), and 226 Hz and 1000 Hz probe tone tympanograms were obtained from the participants using a Ma...

Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions in neonates and effect of contralateral white noise stimulation.

Neonates younger than the age of 12 weeks (10 full-term, 20 preterm) had an audiological assessment consisting of brainstem audiometry, tympanometry, transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions, and spontaneous otoacoustic emissions with contralateral white noise stimulation. Results from brainstem audiometry, tympanometry, and transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions suggested normal middle ear f...

The Effect of Ethnicity on Wideband Absorbance of Neonates with Healthy Middle Ear Functions in Malaysia: A Preliminary Study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Although ethnicity effect on wideband absorbance (WBA) findings was evident for adults, its effect on neonates has not been established yet. This study aimed to investigate the influence of ethnicity on WBA measured at 0 daPa from neonates with healthy middle ear functions. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Participants were 99 normal, healthy, full-term newborn babies with chron...
