Cytoskeleton: Microtubule nucleation takes shape

چکیده
The centrosomal protein gamma-tubulin is part of a ring-shaped complex that can induce microtubule polymerization. This complex may explain how the centrosome nucleates microtubule polymerization, and thereby organizes the microtubule cytoskeleton.

TONNEAU2/FASS regulates the geometry of microtubule nucleation and cortical array organization in interphase Arabidopsis cells.
Organization of microtubules into ordered arrays involves spatial and temporal regulation of microtubule nucleation. Here, we show that acentrosomal microtubule nucleation in plant cells involves a previously unknown regulatory step that determines the geometry of microtubule nucleation. Dynamic imaging of interphase cortical microtubules revealed that the ratio of branching to in-bundle microt...

A new study presents a quantitative biophysical model of microtubule aster growth with autocatalytic microtubule nucleation. The model accounts for asters that grow indefinitely, even when their microtubules are unstable.
متن کاملCytoskeletal Regulation: Coordinating Actin and Microtubule Dynamics in Membrane Trafficking
The Arp2/3 complex is essential for actin nucleation and filament elongation in a variety of intracellular processes. This functional versatility is exerted through the regulation of its activity by nucleation-promoting factors (NPFs). The discovery of a new NPF, WHAMM, reveals unexpected connections between the actin and microtubule cytoskeletons and membrane dynamics during ER-to-Golgi transp...
متن کاملTriggering signaling pathways using F-actin self-organization
The spatiotemporal organization of proteins within cells is essential for cell fate behavior. Although it is known that the cytoskeleton is vital for numerous cellular functions, it remains unclear how cytoskeletal activity can shape and control signaling pathways in space and time throughout the cell cytoplasm. Here we show that F-actin self-organization can trigger signaling pathways by engin...
متن کاملCortical microtubule nucleation can organise the cytoskeleton of Drosophila oocytes to define the anteroposterior axis
Many cells contain non-centrosomal arrays of microtubules (MTs), but the assembly, organisation and function of these arrays are poorly understood. We present the first theoretical model for the non-centrosomal MT cytoskeleton in Drosophila oocytes, in which bicoid and oskar mRNAs become localised to establish the anterior-posterior body axis. Constrained by experimental measurements, the model...
