QED: The Edinburgh TREC-2003 Question Answering System
نویسندگان
چکیده
This report describes a new open-domain answer retrieval system developed at the University of Edinburgh and gives results for the TREC-12 question answering track. Phrasal answers are identified by increasingly narrowing down the search space from a large text collection to a single phrase. The system uses document retrieval, query-based passage segmentation and ranking, semantic analysis from a wide-coverage parser, and a unification-like matching procedure to extract potential answers. A simple Web-based answer validation stage is also applied. The system is based on the Open Agent Architecture and has a parallel design so that multiple questions can be answered simultaneously on a Beowulf cluster.

Question Answering with QED at TREC 2005
This report describes the system developed by the University of Edinburgh and the University of Sydney for the TREC-2005 question answering evaluation exercise. The backbone of our question-answering platform is QED, a linguistically-principled QA system. We experimented with external sources of knowledge, such as Google and Wikipedia, to enhance the performance of QED, especially for reranking...

This report describes the experiments of the University of Edinburgh and the University of Sydney at the TREC-2004 question answering evaluation exercise. Our system combines two approaches: one with deep linguistic analysis using IR on the AQUAINT corpus applied to answer extraction from text passages, and one with a shallow linguistic analysis and shallow inference applied to a large set of s...
متن کاملCross-lingual Question Answering with QED
We present improvements and modifications of the QED open-domain question answering system developed for TREC-2003 to make it cross-lingual for participation in the CrossLinguistic Evaluation Forum (CLEF) Question Answering Track 2004 for the source languages French and German and the target language English. We use rule-based question translation extended with surface pattern-oriented preand p...
متن کاملSelectively Using Linguistic Resources throughout the Question Answering Pipeline
It is generally believed that question answering can benefit from natural language processing methods. So far, however, there have been few systematic studies of this conjecture. We report on ongoing work that is aimed at understanding the contribution of linguistically informed modules and resources to the overall performance of a generic question answering system. Specifically, we describe th...

We present the QITEKAT Question-Answering system based on the conceptual theory of Knowing About Knowledge, which adopts an agent-based approach to extract information from suitable corpora. The components of the QITEKAT system entered by the School of Informatics, University of Wales, Bangor, in the 2003 Text Retrieval Conference are described in detail. We describe PPM compression techniques ...
