Characterization of high molecular weight compounds in urban atmospheric particles

چکیده
The chemical nature of a large mass fraction of ambient organic aerosol particles is not known. High molecular weight compounds (often named humic-like substances) have recently been detected by several authors and these compounds seem to account for a significant fraction of the total organic aerosol mass. Due to the unknown chemical structure of these compounds quantification as well as a determination of their molecular weight is difficult. In this paper we investigate water soluble humic-like substances in ambient urban aerosol using size exclusion chromatographyUV spectroscopy and laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS). LDI-MS was used for the first time to investigate HULIS from atmospheric aerosols. A careful evaluation of the two method shows that both methods complement each other and that both are needed to learn more about the molecular weight distribution and the concentration of humic-like substances. An upper molecular weight limit of humic-like substances of about 700 Da and a concentration of 0.3–1.6μg/m3 air can be estimated, corresponding to 9– 30% of the total organic carbon for an urban background site.

[1] Aerosol samples were collected in Zurich, Switzerland, at an urban background site and were analyzed with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and laser/desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) for water-soluble organic compounds with high molecular weight. Daily samples were collected during two campaigns in winter and summer, for 1 month each. The concentration of high-molecular-we...
متن کاملThe density of humic acids and humic like substances (HULIS) from fresh and aged wood burning and pollution aerosol particles
Atmospheric aerosols play significant roles in climatic related phenomena. Size, density and shape of particles affect their fluid-dynamic parameters which in turn dictate their transport and lifecycle. Moreover, density and shape are also related to particles’ optical properties, influencing their regional and global radiative effects. In the present study we have measured and compared the eff...
متن کاملCCN predictions on particles containing mixed organic and elemental carbon using Köhler theory
Anthropogenic atmospheric aerosols play a large role in climate change by acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and influencing cloud reflectivity. The ability of anthropogenic aerosols to contribute to cloud droplet activation depends on particle size and composition. Up to 90% of fine particle mass (PM2.5) is composed of carbonaceous (elemental and organic carbon) compounds, which play a ...

The research results indicated that wet and dry dust deposition is a function of geographical characteristics. The seasonal wet and dry dust deposition and Fine Particles (PM 2.5) correlation in Iran with elevation, latitude and longitude results that the maximum correlation belongs to height, followed by latitude and longitude; meanwhile height and latitude are strongly and reversely correlate...
