The Welding and Brazing of the Refractory Metals Niobium, Tantalum, Molybdenum and Tungsten - a Review*
نویسندگان
چکیده
This review covers the present and future problems in the development and welding of niobium, tantalum, molybdenum and tungsten and their alloys. Their metallurgical characteristics are discussed together with the influence of impurities and alloying elements on mechanical properties, alloy development and weldability. Other factors briefly discussed are availability, high temperature strength, ductility and oxidation resistance. The general problems which will be met when welding these materials are described together with means of assessing weld quality. Information on the welding and brazing of each material and its alloysis assessed in order to define lines of research. Most reported work has been carried out in the United States and the outline research programme is drawn up as a basis for work in the United Kingdom. It is the opinion of the authors that a welding research programme must be included as an integral part of the development of refractory metal alloys.

Trace Characterization of Refractory Metals by Activation Techniques
The application of activation techniques to the assay of the refractory metals niobium, molybdenum, tantalum and tunjsten for their trace element impurities is reviewed. Activation with reactor neutrons, fast neutrons, charged partides and photons in connection with both the non-destructive and the radiochemical performance is considered. The decisive contribution of activation techniques to th...

Molybdenum (Mo), a bcc metal with a melting point of 2,610°C and a density of 10.22 g/cm, is an important refractory metal. The refractory properties of molybdenum reflect the high strength of interatomic bonding resulting from the overlap of the 4d-orbitals and the number of bonding electrons available (1). The melting point of molybdenum is exceeded only by those of tungsten and tantalum, amo...
متن کاملTensile and compressive behavior of tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum and niobium at the nanoscale
In situ nanomechanical tests are carried out to investigate the tensile and compressive behavior of h0 0 1i-oriented body-centered cubic (bcc) metals W, Mo, Ta and Nb with nanometer dimensions. We find that the strength of these metals exhibits strong size dependence. The compressive size effect in Nb, as evaluated by the log–log slope of strength vs. nanopillar diameter, is 0.93, a factor of 2...

BORON INDUCED SURFACE MODIFICATION OF TRANSITION METALS by Raghasudha Vangaveti Boronizing is a thermo-chemical surface treatment of metals in which boron atoms diffuse into the metal substrate and form hard metallic borides. As a result of boronizing, several properties such as hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and high temperature oxidation resistance improve which make the met...

The molecular structures and reactivity of tantalum oxide-supported metal oxide (V2O5, Nb2O5, CrO3, MoO3, WO3, and Re2O7) catalysts were determined by Raman spectroscopy and the methanol oxidation chemical probe reaction, respectively. The metal oxides form a twodimensional surface metal oxide overlayer on the tantalum oxide support. Under ambient conditions, the hydrated surface metal oxide sp...
