4 Modelling the nitrogen deposition to afforested systems

چکیده
The interaction between landuse change, nitrogen deposition, water recharge and carbon sequestration was investigated in the EU 5th Framework Programme project called AFFOREST. An important aspect of the project was the development of the AFFOREST spatial Decision Support System, designed to look at these issues simultaneously. The development of the nitrogen deposition module is described in this chapter. The module is capable of dealing with changing nitrogen deposition patterns due to varying emissions and landuse characteristics due to afforestation of agricultural land. Not only the module itself is described, but also the application of the module in the different AFFOREST study areas. 4.

Alterations in soil microbial community composition and biomass following agricultural land use change
The effect of agricultural land use change on soil microbial community composition and biomass remains a widely debated topic. Here, we investigated soil microbial community composition and biomass [e.g., bacteria (B), fungi (F), Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Actinomycete (ACT)] using phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) analysis, and basal microbial respiration in afforested, cropland and...
متن کاملAmmonia Emission from a Young Larch Ecosystem Afforested after Clear-Cutting of a Pristine Forest in Northernmost Japan
The present study aimed to elucidate the atmosphere–forest exchange of ammoniacal nitrogen (NHX-N) at a young larch ecosystem. NHX-N exchanges were measured at a remote site in northernmost Japan where 4-year-old larches were growing after a pristine forest had been clear-cut and subsequent dense dwarf bamboo (Sasa) had been strip-cut. The site was a clean area for atmospheric ammonia with mean...
متن کاملLand use influences on acidification and recovery of freshwaters in Galloway, south-west Scotland
The long term response of surface waters to changes in sulphur deposition and afforestation is investigated for three upland river systems in the Galloway region of south-west Scotland. From 1984-1999, these rivers exhibited a statistically significant decline in non-marine sulphate concentrations in response to reduced acid deposition. This reduction in non-marine sulphate was, however, insuff...
متن کاملNitrogen deposition and loss of biological diversity: Agricultural land retirement as a policy response
Current levels of nitrogen deposition, especially ammonia, seriously impact upon ecosystems biological diversity. However, land use policy maintaining and enhancing key ecosystems in the UK in most cases does not explicitly take account of this pollution in terms of onsite management prescriptions. In this paper the economic potential of agricultural land retirement to reduce localised nitrogen...
متن کاملSpatially and temporally continuous estimates of annual total nitrogen deposition over North America, 1860–2013
This report describes the North American Climate Integration and Diagnostics - Nitrogen Deposition Version 1 (NACID-NDEP1) database. The database contains estimates of annual total nitrogen (N) deposition for the purpose of supporting terrestrial ecosystem modelling in North America. It was constructed at 1-km resolution with coverage of Alaska, Canada, and the conterminous U.S., with continuou...
