چکیده

[1] Pressure-release melting at mid-ocean ridges generate compositional and rheological layering in the oceanic mantle that may control the evolution of the oceanic lithosphere. We use dynamic models coupled with melting and petrological models to explore 1) the influence of this layering on the development of small-scale convection under the oceans, 2) its role in determining the thickness of oceanic lithosphere, and 3) its feasibility as responsible for the deviations of seafloor and surface heat flow from predictions by conductive models in mature oceanic lithosphere. Here we show that the existence of smallscale convection is entirely compatible with experimental creep parameters and flow laws, and that the viscosity stratification due to melt extraction (i.e., H2O removal) is the main factor controlling the plate’s thermal evolution, its asymptotic thickness, and the flattening of seafloor and surface heat flow at ages ^70 Ma. The effects of Al-rich phase transitions and compositional layering are minor. Citation: Afonso, J. C., S. Zlotnik, and M. Small-scale gravitational instabilities under the oceans: Implications for the evolution of oceanic lithosphere and its expression in geophysical observables

Sublithospheric small-scale convection (SSC) is thought to be responsible for the flattening of the seafloor depth and surface heat flow observed in mature plates. Although the existence of SSC is generally accepted, its ability to effectively produce a constant lithospheric thickness (i.e. flattening of observables) is a matter of debate. Here we study the development and evolution of SSC with...

Convection Beneath Young Oceanic Lithosphere: Implications for Thermal Structure and Gravity

Small-scale convection under the oceanic lithosphere which begins in the first 5 m.y. of cooling can produce a gravity signal with the amplitude and wavelength observed for large areas of the central Pacific and southern Indian oceans using Seasat altimeter data. The trend of the observed anomalies is parallel to the direction of plate motion as might be expected if they were produced by small-...

Subsidence of normal oceanic lithosphere, apparent thermal expansivity, and seafloor flattening

Seafloor topography has been a key observational constraint on the thermal evolution of oceanic lithosphere, which is the top boundary layer of convection in Earth's mantle. At least for the first ~70 Myr, the age progression of seafloor depth is known to follow the prediction of half-space cooling, and the subsidence rate is commonly believed to be ~350 m Ma. Here we show that, based on a new ...

Small-scale Convection and the Evolution of the Lithosphere

In this thesis we calculate the effect of small-scale convection on the thickness and temperature structure of the lithosphere for three cases where geophysical and geological data may allow us to see these effects. The problems are: (1) the cooling of the oceanic lithosphere; (2) the cooling of a passive rift temperature structure; and (3) the rate of thinning of lithosphere which has been thi...

The role of chemical boundary layers in regulating the thickness of continental and oceanic thermal boundary layers

An important feature of continents and oceans is that they are underlain by chemically distinct mantle, made intrinsically buoyant and highly viscous by melt depletion and accompanying dehydration, respectively. Of interest here are the influences of these preexisting chemical boundary layers on small-scale convective processes (as opposed to large-scale processes, which govern the drift of con...
