چکیده

Effluent water from shrimp ponds typically contains elevated concentrations of dissolved nutrients and suspended particulates compared to influent water. Attempts to improve effluent water quality using filter feeding bivalves and macroalgae to reduce nutrients have previously been hampered by the high concentration of clay particles typically found in untreated pond effluent. These particles inhibit feeding in bivalves and reduce photosynthesis in macroalgae by increasing effluent turbidity. In a small-scale laboratory study, the effectiveness of a three-stage effluent treatment system was investigated. In the first stage, reduction in particle concentration occurred through natural sedimentation. In the second stage, filtration by the Sydney rock oyster, Ž . Saccostrea commercialis Iredale and Roughley , further reduced the concentration of suspended particulates, including inorganic particles, phytoplankton, bacteria, and their associated nutrients. Ž . In the final stage, the macroalga, Gracilaria edulis Gmelin Silva, absorbed dissolved nutrients. Pond effluent was collected from a commercial shrimp farm, taken to an indoor culture facility and was left to settle for 24 h. Subsamples of water were then transferred into laboratory tanks stocked with oysters and maintained for 24 h, and then transferred to tanks containing macroalgae Ž . Ž . for another 24 h. Total suspended solid TSS , chlorophyll a, total nitrogen N , total phosphorus Ž . q y 3y P , NH , NO , and PO , and bacterial numbers were compared before and after each treatment 4 3 4 Ž . Ž . Ž . The combined effect of the sequential treatments resulted in significant reductions in the concentrations of all parameters measured. Despite the probability of considerable differences in sedimentation, filtration and nutrient uptake rates when scaled to farm size, these results demonstrate that integrated treatment has the potential to significantly improve water quality of shrimp farm effluent. q 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Treatment of small scale gold mining wastewater using pilot-scale sedimentation and Cocopeat filter bed system

The use of amalgamation process to recover gold from mined ores by the small-scale gold miners in the Philippines and other developing countries produces and dispose of untreated wastewater to the receiving water bodies. In this study, a field-scale filter bed system was constructed to treat heavy metal metal-laden wastewater collected from small-scale gold mining site in Paracale, Camarines No...

Evaluating the Potential of Bivalve Scallop (Bivalvia: Pectinidae: Scallop) in Biofiltration of Wastewater in Shrimp Farms from Guowater Bay, Chabahar

In this study, the Scallop bivalves were used for biofiltration of wastewater in shrimp farms during spring 2018 from Guowater Bay. Sedimentation, biological and aeration ponds were prepared for biofiltration around the main pool, then, oyster bivalves were collected from natural environment (sea) and were placed in these pools. Concentration of quality parameters were investigated in four samp...

An integrated pest management program for burrowing shrimp control in oyster aquaculture

Integrated pest management is widely applied in terrestrial agriculture, but less so in aquaculture. Parallels to insect control in agricultural fields were exploited in this application of integrated pest management principles to control burrowing shrimp Neotrypaea californiensis and Upogebia pugettensis in Pacific Northwest U.S.A. oyster aquaculture. The pesticide carbaryl has been applied to...

Treatment of Dairy Wastewater Using Pilot Scale Tricking Filter

A pilot scale trickling filter and secondary sedimentation are used to evaluate the feasibility of this process for the treatment of raw dairy waste. The BOD in the raw waste of 252 to 1200 mg/l is reduced 50-73% by a single stage and a further 17-55% by sedimentation tank. Treatment efficiencies are determined at various waste strengths and influent flow rates. With a loading rate of 5-12 kg B...
