Mixed Clastic–Carbonate Cycles and Sequences: Quaternary of Egypt and Carboniferous of England
نویسنده
چکیده
In the geological record one tends to think of formations composed of either limestones or sandstones, but rarely both. In fact, there are many cases of interbedded clastics and carbonates in repeated cyclic arrangements. Such units occur on the small-scale (metre-thick cycles or parasequences, 4/5 order), and on the larger-scale (10’s metre-thick, 4 order high-frequency sequences and 100’s metre-thick, 3 order sequences). Mixed lithologies, namely sandy limestones and calcarenaceous sandstones are relatively rare rocks, or at least they are rarely described and classified properly. Terrigenous input is dominantly a function of clastic availability and relative sea-level change, with the rate of change of major significance (see MOUNT, 1984 Mixed Clastic–Carbonate Cycles and Sequences: Quaternary of Egypt and Carboniferous of England

Coralline red algae from the Lower Pliocene Shagra Formation of Wadi Wizer, Red Sea coast, Egypt: Biofacies analysis, systematics and palaeoenvironmental implications
Coralline red algae are highly abunadant and well diversified in the well exposed carbonate deposits of the Lower Pliocene Shagra Formation at Wadi Wizer, Red Sea coast, Egypt. Lithostratigraphically, the Shagra Formation unconformably overlies the Late Miocene Marsa Alam Formation and underlies the Quaternary deposits. This carbonate facies is dominated by different assemblage of coralline red...
متن کاملFacies, sedimentary environments and sequence stratigraphy of Cretaceous deposits in the northwest of Azerbaijan, Iran
The Cretaceous deposits in Morakan, located in the northeast of Khoy, a town in western Azerbaijan province, Iran, are primarily made up of carbonate rocks. These deposits, which are of 717 meters thick, lie on the clastic facies of Jurassic and are covered with beneath the pelagic beds of the Upper Cretaceous. To investigate the facies, sedimentary environment and sequential stratigraphy of th...
متن کاملEocene Stratigraphy, Facies, Sequenses and Depositional History in Shabraweet Area, North of Suez, Eastern Desert, Egypt
The Eocene rocks in Shabraweet area comprise the Lower, Middle and Upper Eocene stages. Each stage consists of only one rock unit; the Minia Formation, the Mokattam Formation and the Maadi Formation, respectively. The Minia Formation shows angular unconformity relationship with the underlying Cretaceous rocks and disconformity relationship with the overlying Mokattam Formation. The Maadi Format...
متن کاملBiostratigraphy of Devonian-Carboniferous boundary in Tuyeh-Darvar section, north of Iran
Devonian-Carboniferous boundary is not clear in the Eastern Alborz Mountains. In the current study Tuyeh-Darvar section with about 170 m, thickness is selected. In this investigation, the primary goal is revision of Devonian/Carboniferous Boundary (known as DCB) and the other goal is the redefinition of the DCB as a famous necessity (based on ICS program in 2008 for defining the boundary and to...
متن کاملWARM TO COLD WATER CARBONATE FORMATION DURING THE ORDOVICIAN AND THE JURASSIC: EXAMPLES FROM IRAN, AUSTRALIA, AND ENGLAND
Isotope data from bulk carbonates, micrite, marine calcite cements, non-skeletal grains and brachiopods indicate deposition of a wide spectrum of warm to cold water carbonates during the Ordovician and the Jurassic. This isotopic interpretation is supported by warm to cold climatic models proposed for the Ordovician and the Jurassic. These carbonates formed during the Greenhouse mode (condition...
