چکیده

Color constancy remains an important subject of research on color standards, computer imaging, and human color vision. There are many different theories and algorithms that interpret and predict constancy. This paper analyzes three different approaches that are frequently discussed separately in the literature: pixel-based colorimetric standards of appearance; computer imaging calculations of an object's reflectance; and calculation of appearance using spatial comparisons. This paper compares and contrasts these approaches. Further, it reviews experiments that measure appearance in color constancy in a variety of situations. A pivotal tool in analyzing models of constancy is the correlation of object's reflectance with appearance. Each approach has different interpretation of this correlation. Using measurements of constancy with particular attention to reflectance, illumination, and appearance helps us to see the successes and limitations of each constancy approach.

A Spatial Color-Gamut Calculation to Optimize Color Appearance

Colorimetry is limited to image data from a single pixel. Measures of errors between an “original” and a “reproduction” are usually described as the distance between the two values of a pixel in a colorimetric three-dimensional space. Human color constancy uses spatial comparisons between different parts of the image. The relationships among neighboring pixels are far more important than the ab...

Mechanism of Color Constancy

There are two widely held theories of color constancy based on very different mechanisms: Chromatic Adaptation and Spatial Comparisons. Chromatic Adaptation is based on the change of retinal sensitivity in response to changes in incident light. The Spatial Comparisons mechanism is insensitive to illumination changes because it uses ratios of radiance from different pixels in the image. A spatia...

Computational Color Constancy with Spatial Correlations

The color of a scene recorded by a trichromatic sensor varies with the spectral distribution of the illuminant. For recognition and many other applications, we seek to process these measurements to obtain a color representation that is unaffected by illumination changes. Achieving such color constancy is an ill-posed problem because both the spectral distribution of the illuminant and the scene...

Using Color Constancy to Advantage in Color Gamut Calculations

The human color constancy uses spatial comparisons. The relationships among neighboring pixels are far more important than the absolute differences between the colorimetric values of an original and its gamut-limited reproduction. If all the pixels in an image have a reproduction error in the same direction (red, green, blue, lightness, hue, chroma), then our color constancy mechanism helps to ...

Color Constancy by Learning to Predict Chromaticity from Luminance

Color constancy is the recovery of true surface color from observed color, and requires estimating the chromaticity of scene illumination to correct for the bias it induces. In this paper, we show that the per-pixel color statistics of natural scenes—without any spatial or semantic context—can by themselves be a powerful cue for color constancy. Specifically, we describe an illuminant estimatio...
