Prebiotic Organic Microstructures as Model Protocells
نویسندگان
چکیده
A variety of prebiotic syntheses starting from reduced and gas precursors, or small reactive organic intermediates produce a variety of micron and sub-micron sized organic microstructures, including spheres, filaments and toroids. Many of these structures are hollow, and they display dynamic and reversible self-assembly. We report here some of their physical characteristics that might be compatible with proto-cellular evolution. Adaptive Living Material Technologies & Biomimetic Microsystems

Framing major prebiotic transitions as stages of protocell development: three challenges for origins-of-life research
Conceiving the process of biogenesis as the evolutionary development of highly dynamic and integrated protocell populations provides the most appropriate framework to address the difficult problem of how prebiotic chemistry bridged the gap to full-fledged living organisms on the early Earth. In this contribution we briefly discuss the implications of taking dynamic, functionally integrated prot...
متن کاملOrganic compounds in fluid inclusions of Archean quartz—Analogues of prebiotic chemistry on early Earth
The origin of life is still an unsolved mystery in science. Hypothetically, prebiotic chemistry and the formation of protocells may have evolved in the hydrothermal environment of tectonic fault zones in the upper continental crust, an environment where sensitive molecules are protected against degradation induced e.g. by UV radiation. The composition of fluid inclusions in minerals such as qua...

Primordial cells presumably combined RNAs, which functioned as catalysts and carriers of genetic information, with an encapsulating membrane of aggregated amphiphilic molecules. Major questions regarding this hypothesis include how the four bases and the sugar in RNA were selected from a mixture of prebiotic compounds and co-localized with such membranes, and how the membranes were stabilized a...
متن کاملEffect of migration in a diffusion model for template coexistence in protocells.
The compartmentalization of distinct templates in protocells and the exchange of templates between them (migration) are key elements of a modern scenario for prebiotic evolution. Here we use the diffusion approximation of population genetics to study analytically the steady-state properties of such a prebiotic scenario. The coexistence of distinct template types inside a protocell is achieved b...
