Monitoring of dust-enshrouded AGB stars in the LMC

چکیده
Twelve IRAS sources in the LMC with colours similar to those expected for dust-enshrounded AGB stars have been monitored in the infrared for 1880 days. The objects come from the list of Reid (1991). Nine of these objects are large amplitude variables with periods in the range 530 to 1295 days. The variability confirms their status as dust-enshrouded AGB stars. Combined with the results of Wood et al. (1992), a total of 15 large amplitude, dust-enshrouded AGB stars are now known in the LMC but it is estimated that many hundreds more await discovery. The objects studied in this paper are ∼2 magnitudes fainter in Mbol than the previously known variables. The low luminosities of six of the new objects suggest that they are evolving from the tip of the AGB of the dominant intermediate-age LMC population which has an initial mass∼1.5M and age∼23×109 years. It is suggested that these stars should be carbonrich although several of them have been tentatively classified as oxygen-rich. The period range of the objects is consistent with that expected from theoretical models of AGB evolution with mass loss. The observations presented here clearly demonstrate that once significant mass loss and dust formation occurs, large amplitude LPVs no longer fall on the tight (Mbol, logP ) or (K, logP ) relation found for the Mira variables with P <∼ 450 days.

Mass-loss rates and luminosity functions of dust-enshrouded AGB stars and red supergiants in the LMC
A radiative transfer code is used to model the spectral energy distributions of 57 mass-losing Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) for which ISO spectroscopic and photometric data are available. As a result we derive mass-loss rates and bolometric luminosities. A gap in the luminosity distribution around Mbol = −7.5 mag separates AG...

The luminosities and periods of obscured AGB stars in the LMC are discussed using a combination of ISO and ground-based infrared photometry. The bolometric luminosities of these stars fall close to an extrapolation of the period-luminosity relation derived for oxygen-rich Mira variables, with both oxygenand carbon-rich stars falling close to the same relation. It has been known for many years t...

Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using mid-infrared spectra, together with photometric data from the SAGE programme, we establish a colour selection of carbon-rich AGB stars with intermediate and high mass-loss rates. We also established mass-loss rate ...

We report on an analysis of the gas and dust budget in the the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the LMC. This is the first time we can quantitatively assess the gas and dust input from AGB stars over a complete galaxy, fully...

The dependence of stellar molecular bands on the metallicity is studied using infrared L-band spectra of AGB stars (both carbon-rich and oxygen-rich) and M-type supergiants in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) and in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy. The spectra cover SiO bands for oxygen-rich stars, and acetylene (C 2 H 2), CH and HCN bands for carbon-rich AGB stars. T...
