Distribution of Equilibrium Free Energies in a Thermodynamic System with Broken Ergodicity

چکیده
At low temperatures the configurational phase space of a macroscopic complex system (e.g., a spin-glass) of N ∼ 10 interacting particles may split into an exponential number Ωs ∼ exp(const × N) of ergodic sub-spaces (thermodynamic states). It is usually assumed that the equilibrium collective behavior of such a system is determined by its ground thermodynamic states of the minimal free-energy density, and that the equilibrium free energies follow the distribution of exponential decay. But actually for some complex systems, the equilibrium free-energy values may follow a Gaussian distribution within an intermediate temperature range, and consequently their equilibrium properties are contributed by excited thermodynamic states. Based on this analysis, the re-weighting parameter y in the cavity approach of spin-glasses is easily understood. Depending on the free-energy distribution, the optimal y can either be equal to or be strictly less than the inverse temperature β. PACS numbers: 05.20.-y, 05.70.Fh, 75.10.Nr

The product distribution of methanol to hydrocarbons conversion over SAPO-34 and ZSM-5 catalysts was studied using thermodynamic equilibrium and Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) distributions. The equilibrium compositions were calculated using constrained Gibbs free energy minimization. The effect of catalyst type was considered by setting upper limits to product carbon number due to sh...

The interaction of histone H2B and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) was studies via equilibrium dialysis method at two different temperatures, at pH 6.4 in phosphate buffer. The binding data were used to obtain the Gibbs free energy of interaction, which is interpreted in terms of a theoretical model based on the Wyman binding potential. The data were then used to obtain...
متن کاملLocal Fluctuations and Local Observers in Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics
The distribution function associated with a classical gas at equilibrium is considered. We prove that apart from a factorisable multiplier, the distribution function is fully determined by the correlations among local momenta fluctuations. Using this result we discuss the conditions which enable idealised local observers, who are immersed in the gas and form a part of it, to determine the distr...
