چکیده

Magnetic-field-induced phase transitions were studied with a two-dimensional electron AlGaAs/GaAs system. The temperature-driven flow diagram shows the features of the Γ(2) modular symmetry, which includes distorted flowlines and shiftted critical point. The deviation of the critical conductivities is attributed to a small but resolved spin splitting, which reduces the symmetry in Landau quantization. [B. P. Dolan, Phys. Rev. B 62, 10278.] Universal scaling is found under the reduction of the modular symmetry. It is also shown that the Hall conductivity could still be governed by the scaling law when the semicircle law and the scaling on the longitudinal conductivity are

Γ(2) Modular Symmetry, Renormalization Group Flow and the Quantum Hall Effect

We construct a family of holomorphic β-functions whose RG flow preserves the Γ(2) modular symmetry and reproduces the observed stability of the Hall plateaus. The semi-circle law relating the longitudinal and Hall conductivities that has been observed experimentally is obtained from the integration of the RG equations for any permitted transition which can be identified from the selection rules...

Duality in the Quantum Hall Effect - the Rôle of Electron Spin

At low temperatures the phase diagram for the quantum Hall effect has a powerful symmetry arising from the Law of Corresponding States. This symmetry gives rise to an infinite order discrete group which is a generalisation of Kramers-Wannier duality for the two dimensional Ising model. The duality group, which is a subgroup of the modular group, is analysed and it is argued that there is a quan...

Effect of Aharonov-Bohm Phase in Semiclassical Quantum Tunneling

The role of Aharonov-Bohm effect in quantum tunneling is examined when potential is defined on S1 and has N -fold symmetry. For N = 2 case the quenched tunneling splitting occurs at cos Φ/2 = 0 where Φ is magnetic flux. For N = 3 and N = 4 cases the ground state energies splitted from threeand four-fold degenerate vacua by quantum tunneling are explicitly computed. The N = 4 case is applied to ...

Skyrmion liquid in SU(2)-invariant quantum Hall systems.

There are several physically different realizations of Quantum Hall systems where electrons carry additional SU(2) degrees of freedom. In the simplest case such degree of freedom is electron spin. In free space electrons have the Landee factor gL = 2 and the Zeeman splitting gLμBB is precisely equal to the distance beetween the Landau levels ωc. However, in real Quantum Hall devices there are s...

Probing temperature-driven flow lines in a gated two-dimensional electron gas with tunable spin-splitting.

We study the temperature flow of conductivities in a gated GaAs two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) containing self-assembled InAs dots and compare the results with recent theoretical predictions. By changing the gate voltage, we are able to tune the 2DEG density and thus vary disorder and spin-splitting. Data for both the spin-resolved and spin-degenerate phase transitions are presented, the f...
