A Program for “ Naturalizing ” Metaphysics , with Application
نویسندگان
چکیده
I wish to advance a certain program for doing metaphysics, a program in which cognitive science would play an important role. This proposed ingredient is absent from most contemporary metaphysics. There are one or two local parts of metaphysics where a role for cognitive science is commonly accepted, but I advocate a wider range of application. I begin by laying out the general program and its rationale, with selected illustrations. Then I explore in some detail a single application: the ontology of events. I do not push hard for any particular ontological conclusion, about either events or any other topic. The focus is methodology, not a particular output of the methodology. Here is a recently published characterization of the metaphysical enterprise, one that probably captures orthodox practice pretty well and to which I take no exception.

The Influence of Ibn Sìnå on Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and His Followers
This article is an investigation into the nature of the Sufi metaphysics of Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and his followers. In contrast to previous scholars, who have considered Qinawì to be dismissive of philosophy in a way similar to Ghazålì, the author shows that in fact philosophical metaphysics, and in particular the formulations of Ibn Sìnå, had a great impact on Qinawì and his followers in the sch...
متن کاملNaturalizing Self-Consciousness
The crucial problem of self-consciousness is how to account for knowing self-reference without launching into a regress or without presupposing self-consciousness rather than accounting for it (circle). In the literature we find two bottom-up proposals for solving the traditional problem: the postulation of nonconceptual forms of self-consciousness and the postulation of a pre-reflexive form of...
متن کاملNaturalism and transcendentalism in the naturalization of phenomenology
In this article, an account is given of the relation between naturalism and transcendentalism in the current project of naturalizing phenomenology. This project usually takes the transcendental point of view to be in conflict with the naturalizing attitude and the contemporary sciences of cognition thus seem to require cutting Husserlian phenomenology from its anti-naturalist roots, i.e., natur...

Metaphysics, immaterial and semi-material beings and their particularities have been known among those opposing human powers of reasoning. Some, therefore, refuting any illuminative knowledge, have only accepted reasonable understanding. Jinn is one of distinct immaterial beings; the one that has qualified human mind for a long time. Can one accept the belief of those considering Jinn a real...
