چکیده
The fundamental topic in this document is the development of cracks in steel. For structures subjected to cyclic loads, such cracks can develop over time and ultimately reach the size at which some dramatic failure occur. While this problem is rare in structures made of “mild steel,” the use of “high tensile” steel changes that situation. It is straightforward to double the strength of mild steel by adding carbon, but this may increase the material’s brittleness by a factor of fifteen (Gordon 1978). If the stress in the structure was also doubled to take advantage of the increased strength, then the capacity of the material to cope with cracks is reduced by a factor of as much as 2215=60, as explained by the equations in this document. This is a dramatic reduction which may make cracks the governing design concern.

Application of Thermography in Analysis of Fatigue Strength of Materials and Structures
Thermography is becoming more and more relevant method in industry and as a research tool. It is an accepted method in many fields where non-destructive testing is carried out. In this paper focus was on evaluation of stress concentrations and fatigue of metal structures. Three thermographic methods: Thermoelastic stress analysis, Risitano method and acquisition of plastification zone and fract...
متن کاملPrediction of fatigue life of reinforced concrete bridges using Fracture Mechanics
With the occurrence of higher and more frequent axle loads, bridges are more solicited by fatigue loading. Bridge elements like deck slabs are subjected to a high number of stress cycles at relatively small stress magnitudes. The application of Fracture Mechanics as a useful tool for the analysis of fatigue crack growth in steel elements was demonstrated by Paris et al. in the early 1960s. With...
متن کاملCrackling noise in fatigue fracture of heterogeneous materials
We present a theoretical study of the fatigue fracture of heterogeneous materials. A generic fiber bundle model is proposed, which provides a direct connection between the microscopic fracture mechanisms and the macroscopic time evolution of fatigue. In the model, material elements fail either due to immediate breaking or undergo a damage accumulating ageing process. On the macro-level the mode...
متن کاملEffects of porosity on the fatigue performance of polymethyl methacrylate bone cement: an analytical investigation.
Porosity has been shown to affect the fatigue life of bone cements, but, although vacuum mixing is widely used to reduce porosity in the clinical setting, results have been mixed and the effects of porosity are not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of porosity using stress analysis and fracture mechanics techniques. The stress concentrations arising at voids ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Ferrite Grain Size on the Fatigue Behavior of Ferrite-martensite Dual-phase Steels
The effect of ferrite grain size on the fatigue and tensile properties of dual phase steels with a 0.25 volume fraction of martensite (Vm) under different heat treatments was investigated. The heat treatments were homogenized at 1200 oC along with several subsequent normalizations at 910 oC, resulting in different microstructures and mechanical properties. After heat treatment, the obtained ste...

Uniaxial tension-compression fatigue behavior of 3-mol%yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals was investigated. Hysteresis in the stress-plastic strain curve featured cumulative plastic strain and weakened elastic stiffness. Fracture statistics in terms of cycle-to-failure depends strongly on the maximum stress and less on the stress amplitude. Preexisting processing flaws were iden...
