An Imaging System for C. elegans Behavior.

چکیده
Many experiments in C. elegans neurobiology and development benefit from automated imaging of worm behavior. Here we describe procedures for building a flexible and inexpensive imaging system using standard optical and mechanical components.

Agarose Microchambers for Long-term Calcium Imaging of Caenorhabditis elegans
Behavior is controlled by the nervous system. Calcium imaging is a straightforward method in the transparent nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to measure the activity of neurons during various behaviors. To correlate neural activity with behavior, the animal should not be immobilized but should be able to move. Many behavioral changes occur during long time scales and require recording over many ...
متن کاملUnderstanding Synaptogenesis and Functional Connectome in C. elegans by Imaging Technology
Formation of functional synapses is a fundamental process for establishing neural circuits and ultimately for expressing complex behavior. Extensive research has interrogated how such functional synapses are formed and how synapse formation contributes to the generation of neural circuitry and behavior. The nervous system of Caenorhabditis elegans, due to its relatively simple structure, the tr...
متن کاملMicrofluidic Platforms for Whole-animal Screening with C. Elegans
This talk will present recent innovations pursued in Ben-Yakar research group towards developing microfluidic platforms and imaging modalities for whole-animal screening using C. elegans. Their small body size and survivability in liquid medium make C. elegans suitable for microfluidic manipulations. Their transparent body is ideal for in vivo optical manipulations such as precise laser axotomy...
متن کاملNeural circuits mediate electrosensory behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans.
The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans deliberately crawls toward the negative pole in an electric field. By quantifying the movements of individual worms navigating electric fields, we show that C. elegans prefers to crawl at specific angles to the direction of the electric field in persistent periods of forward movement and that the preferred angle is proportional to field strength. C. elegans r...
متن کاملNeurophysiological methods in C. elegans: an introduction.
The simple and well-defined structure of the C. elegans nervous system has made it an attractive model for studying the neural and genetic basis of behavior. However, the wider use physiological methods for monitoring neural activity in vivo or determining the effects of specific ion channels on neuronal function has been a relatively recent development. This chapter presents a compendium of pr...
