Machines generating novelty

چکیده
Computation and digital processes have become integral to everyday communication. The study of how digital media produce meaning, known as computational semiotics, works towards an understanding of the unique properties and characteristics of communications mediated by computers. Articulating and mapping new forms of communication and expression enabled by digital media is important in understanding its potential, its strengths and weaknesses, and how to use it effectively.

Support Vector Novelty Detection Applied to Jet Engine Vibration Spectra
A system has been developed to extract diagnostic information from jet engine carcass vibration data. Support Vector Machines applied to novelty detection provide a measure of how unusual the shape of a vibration signature is, by learning a representation of normality. We describe a novel method for Support Vector Machines of including information from a second class for novelty detection and g...
متن کاملNovelty detection employing an L2 optimal non-parametric density estimator
This paper considers the application of a recently proposed L2 optimal nonparametric Reduced Set Density Estimator to novelty detection and binary classification and provides empirical comparisons with other forms of density estimation as well as Support Vector Machines.
متن کاملNovelty in complex adaptive systems (CAS) dynamics: a computational theory of actor innovation
This paper develops the formal foundations for the famous phase transition that physicists call ‘life at the edge of chaos’, the domain on which novelty or innovation emerges. For this the computational approach first introduced to game theory by Kenneth Binmore is used with players modelled as Turing Machines. The 1931 Gödel logic involving the Liar defines the pure logic of opposition. Only a...
متن کاملNovelty And Surprises In Complex Adaptive System (CAS) Dynamics: A Computational Theory of Actor Innovation
The work of John von Neumann in the 1940’s on self-reproducing machines as models for biological systems and self-organized complexity provides the computational legacy for CAS. Following this, the major hypothesis emanating from Wolfram (1984), Langton (1992, 1994), Kaufmann (1993) and Casti (1994) is that the sine qua non of complex adaptive systems is their capacity to produce novelty or ‘su...
متن کاملInvestigating Priorities in Iran's Economic Sectors: Application of Input- Output Table
Generating effective employment opportunities is one of the principal challenges faced by development planners in Iran. If investment projects are undertaken on the basis of sectoral priorities in production and employment, the economic and social problems emanating from unemployment will be reduced, helping the Country’s process of development. In this paper, an attempt is made to identify key...
