Another look at anomalous J / Ψ suppression in Pb + Pb collisions at P / A = 158 GeV / c

چکیده
A new data presentation is proposed in order to consider anomalous J/Ψ suppression in Pb + Pb collisions at P/A = 158 GeV/c. If the inclusive differential cross section with respect to a centrality variable is available, one can plot the yield of J/Ψ events per Pb–Pb collision as a function of an estimated squared impact parameter. Both quantities are raw experimental data and have a clear physical meaning. As compared to the usual J/Ψ over Drell–Yan ratio, there is a huge gain in statistical accuracy. This presentation could be applied advantageously to many processes in the field of nucleus–nucleus collisions at various energies.

J/ψ Suppression as a Signal for the Quark-Gluon Plasma
We review the search for the quark-gluon plasma using the signal of the suppression of J/ψ production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Recent anomalous J/ψ suppression in high-energy Pb-Pb collisions observed by the NA50 Collaboration are examined and compared with earlier results from pA and nucleus-nucleus collisions with heavy ions of smaller mass numbers. The anomalous suppression of J/...
متن کاملStatistical Coalescence Model Analysis of J / ψ Production in Pb + Pb Collisions at 158 A ·
Production of J/ψ mesons in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical coalescence model. The model is in agreement with the experimental data of the NA50 Collaboration for Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A·GeV in a wide centrality range, including the so called “anomalous” suppression domain. The model description of the J/ψ data requires, however, strong enhancement of the open charm p...
متن کاملDrell-Yan Cross Section and J/ψ Production in High-Energy Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions
We use the Drell-Yan differential distribution dN DY /dET in high-energy nucleusnucleus collisions to obtain a relation between the transverse energy ET and the impact parameter b. Such a relation is then utilized to study the transverse-energy dependence of J/ψ production in Pb-Pb collisions, using the J/ψ absorption model presented previously. The anomalous Pb-Pb suppression data at 158A GeV ...
متن کاملIs There Anomalous J/ψ Suppression in Present-day Heavy-ion Collisions?
We re-analyse the data on J/ψ cross sections for proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions obtained by the CERN experiments NA38, NA51 and NA50. Our systematic analysis of error propagation shows that the no anomalous suppression of J/ψ in Pb-Pb collisions can be substantiated at 95% confidence limit. The significance of the NA50 result would be enhanced by more precise p-A data on J/ψ cros...
متن کاملJ/ψ Suppression in Heavy Ion Collisions at the CERN SPS
We reexamine the production of J/ψ and other charmonium states for a variety of target-projectile choices at the SPS, in particular for the interesting comparison between S+U at 200 GeV/c and Pb+Pb at 158 GeV/c as observed in the experiments NA38 and NA50 respectively. For this study we use a newly constructed cascade code LUCIFER II, which yields acceptable descriptions of both hard and soft p...
