Models For Dependable Computation with Multiple Inputs and Some Hardness Results

چکیده
We consider the problem of dependable computation with multiple inputs. The goal is to study when redundancy can help to achieve survivability and when it cannot. We use AND/OR graphs to model fault tolerant computations with multiple inputs. While there is a polynomial time algorithm for finding vertex disjoint paths in networks, we will show that the equivalent problem in computation systems with multiple inputs is NP-hard. Our main results are as follows. (1) We present a general model for fault tolerant computation systems with multiple inputs: AND/OR graphs. (2) We show that it is NP-hard to find two vertex disjoint solution graphs in an AND/OR graph. It follows that in the general case redundancy cannot help to achieve survivability, assuming P 6=NP. ∗Research supported by DARPA F30602-97-1-0205. A Critical Analysis of Models for Fault-Tolerant and Secure Computation
We consider the problem of fault-tolerant dependable computation with multiple inputs. Although the traditional model assumes that the number of faults is relatively small when the enemy has limited resources, this assumption is unreasonable when some faults may be interdependent. Indeed, a computation system may have several replicated components and the adversary may exploit a common weakness...
متن کاملUsing Approximation Hardness to Achieve Dependable Computation
Redundancy has been utilized to achieve fault tolerant computation and to achieve reliable communication in networks of processors. These techniques can only be extended to computations solely based on functions in one input in which redundant hardware or software (servers) are used to compute intermediate and end results. However, almost all practical computation systems consist of components ...

متن کاملEfficiency evaluation of wheat farming: a network data envelopment analysis approach
Traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) models deal with measurement of relative efficiency of decision making units (DMUs) in which multiple-inputs consumed to produce multiple-outputs. One of the drawbacks of these models is neglecting internal processes of each system, which may have intermediate products and/or independent inputs and/or outputs. In this paper some methods which are usab...
متن کاملAn extended of multiple criteria data envelopment analysis models for ratio data
One of the problems of the data envelopment analysis traditional models in the multiple form that is the weights corresponding to certain inputs and outputs are considered zero in the calculation of efficiency and this means that not all input and output components are utilized for the evaluation of efficiency, as some are ignored. The above issue causes the efficiency score of the under evalua...
