چکیده

[1] To investigate the observed atmospheric response to SST variability in the North Pacific, the Maximum Covariance Analysis is performed between the monthly sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) and the 500-hPa geopotential height anomaly over the North Pacific using observations of the period 1958–1993. In addition to the strong remote ENSO impact in winter months, the MCA analysis suggests a significant local atmospheric response, with the summer atmosphere corresponding to the preceding winter SST over the North Pacific. In this local response, a horseshoe SSTA in winter, with a positive SSTA loading over the central-western North Pacific surrounded by a negative SSTA, appears to persist into the spring and summer, eventually leading to an atmospheric response in summer with a wave-train over the mid-latitude North Pacific. This local response may imply some predictability of the North Pacific summer atmospheric circulation with a lead time of up to 6 months. Citation: Liu, Q., N. Wen, and Z. Interdecadal variability over the North Pacific in a multi-century climate simulation*

Interdecadal variability in the North Pacific region is investigated in a 500-y control integration of the Hamburg ECHAMcLSG coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model. The spectrum is predominantly red, but a significant peak with a period of about 18 y is detected in the spectrum of sea surface temperature (SST). This peak is shown to be associated with an irregular oscillation that i...

Subtropical Forcing of Tropical Pacific Climate and Decadal ENSO Modulation

The relative impact of the subtropical North and South Pacific Oceans on the tropical Pacific climate mean state and variability is estimated using an ocean–atmosphere–sea ice coupled general circulation model. Tailored experiments are performed in which the model is forced by idealized sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the subtropics of both hemispheres. The main results of this stu...

The Impact of ENSO on Atmospheric Intraseasonal Variability as Inferred from Observations and GCM Simulations

The impact of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the atmospheric intraseasonal variability in the North Pacific is assessed, with emphasis on how ENSO modulates midlatitude circulation anomalies associated with the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) in the Tropics and the westward-traveling patterns (WTP) in high latitudes. The database for this study consists of the output of a general ci...

Broadening the Atmospheric Bridge Paradigm: ENSO Teleconnections to the Tropical West Pacific-Indian Oceans Over the Seasonal Cycle and to the North Pacific in Summer

During El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, atmospheric teleconnections associated with sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the equatorial Pacific can influence the ocean thousands of kilometers away. We use several data sets to delineate this “atmospheric bridge” between ocean basins, focusing on two emerging research areas: 1) the evolution of atmosphere-ocean interactions in th...

Anatomy of North Pacific Decadal Variability

A systematic analysis of North Pacific decadal variability in a full-physics coupled ocean–atmosphere model is executed. The model is an updated and improved version of the coupled model studied by Latif and Barnett. Evidence is sought for determining the details of the mechanism responsible for the enhanced variance of some variables at 20–30-yr timescales. The possible mechanisms include a mi...
