چکیده

Negative electrorheological responses induced by micro-particle electrorotation in two-dimensional Couette flow geometries are analyzed by a set of continuum modeling field equations originating from anti-symmetric/couple stress theories in the finite spin viscosity small spin velocity (FSV) limit. Analytical solutions are obtained for the first time to express the spin velocity, linear velocity, and effective viscosity in terms of the electric field strength, driving shear rate, boundary condition selection parameter, and spin viscosity. Good agreement is achieved between the FSV theoretical predictions presented herein and the experimental measurements reported in recent literature for the effective viscosity for low driving shear rates. 2011 Elsevier B.V. Continuum modeling of micro-particle electrorotation in Couette and Poiseuille flows-The zero spin viscosity limit

A continuum mechanical model is presented to analyze the negative electrorheological responses of a particle-liquid mixture with the suspended micro-particles undergoing Quincke rotation for both Couette and Poiseuille flow geometries by combining particle electromechanics and continuum antisymmetric/couple stress analyses in the zero spin viscosity limit. We propose a phenomenological polariza...

Magnetic fluid behavior in uniform DC, AC, and rotating magnetic fields

New flows and instabilities are demonstrated for magnetic fluids and by dual analogy to dielectric fluids. If a fluid drop is contained in a thin gap between two glass plates (Hele–Shaw cell) with a simultaneously applied in-plane rotating field and a DC axial field, smooth spirals or an abrupt transformation to many small droplets can occur. A preliminary minimum magnetization and surface ener...

Effects of spin viscosity on ferrofluid flow profiles in alternating and rotating magnetic fields

Previous models of plane-Poiseuille flow of ferrofluids in alternating and rotating magnetic fields are extended by including the effects of spin diffusion and planar Couette flow. Accurate modeling of this problem is required for the design of experiments to determine key parameters for previously reported anomalous forward and backward ferrofluid pumping behavior in alternating and rotating m...

Using Burnett Equations to Derive an Analytical Solution to Pressure-Driven Gas Flow and Heat Transfer in Micro-Couette Flow

The aim of the present study is deriving an analytical solution to incompressible thermal flow in a micro-Couette geometry in the presence of a pressure gradient using Burnett equations with first- and second-order slip boundary conditions. The lower plate of the micro-Couette structure is stationary, whereas the upper plate moves at a constant velocity. Non-dimensional axial velocity and tempe...

Effect of Geometry of the Grooves on the Mixing of Fluids in Micro Mixer Channel

Understanding the flow fields at the micro-scale is a key to develop methods of successfully mixing fluids for micro-scale applications. This paper investigates flow characteristics and mixing of three different geometries in micro-channel. A Circular groove micro mixer has been designed and simulated. One such channel is shown in Figure1. The geometry of the channels taken was rectangular with...
