From Intention to Action: Hierarchical Sensorimotor Transformation in the Posterior Parietal Cortex12

چکیده
Cover FigureAlthough both the PRR and area 5d have been found to be intimately involved in visually guided reach, several recent studies of reference frame, decision making, and sequential movement suggest that they might play distinct roles in planning and control of reach at different levels of complexity, indicating a hierarchical circuitry participating in translation from abstract intention into concrete action plan.

Intention, Action Planning, and Decision Making in Parietal-Frontal Circuits
The posterior parietal cortex and frontal cortical areas to which it connects are responsible for sensorimotor transformations. This review covers new research on four components of this transformation process: planning, decision making, forward state estimation, and relative-coordinate representations. These sensorimotor functions can be harnessed for neural prosthetic operations by decoding i...
متن کاملDifferential involvement of parietal and precentral regions in movement preparation and motor intention.
Flexible goal-oriented behavior relies on spatial coordinate transformations and motor control mechanisms, but also on the capability to take advantage of contextual information for steering the sensorimotor machinery. Although accurate performance of a sensorimotor task requires parietal and frontal regions, their differential contribution and functional relationship with other associative reg...
متن کاملA Sensorimotor Model for Computing Intended Reach Trajectories
The presumed role of the primate sensorimotor system is to transform reach targets from retinotopic to joint coordinates for producing motor output. However, the interpretation of neurophysiological data within this framework is ambiguous, and has led to the view that the underlying neural computation may lack a well-defined structure. Here, I consider a model of sensorimotor computation in whi...
متن کاملNeuronal representation of saccadic error in macaque posterior parietal cortex (PPC)
Motor control, motor learning, self-recognition, and spatial perception all critically depend on the comparison of motor intention to the actually executed movement. Despite our knowledge that the brainstem-cerebellum plays an important role in motor error detection and motor learning, the involvement of neocortex remains largely unclear. Here, we report the neuronal computation and representat...
متن کاملNeurology of widely embedded free will.
Free will is classically attributed to the prefrontal cortex. In clinical neurology, prefrontal lesions have consistently been shown to cause impairment of internally driven action and increased reflex-like behaviour. Recently, parietal contributions to both free selection at early stages of sensorimotor transformations and perception of specifically self-intended movements were demonstrated in...
