Remote sensing for analyzing smallholder farm yields.

چکیده
Countering TB prodrug resistance The arsenal of antibiotics for treating tuberculosis (TB) contains many prodrugs, such as ethionamide, which need activation by normal metabolism to release their toxic effects. Ethionamide is potentiated by small molecules. Blondiaux et al. screened for more potent analogs and identified a lead compound called SMARt-420. This small molecule inactivates a TetR-like repressor, EthR2, and boosts ethionamide activation. SMARt-420 successfully promoted clearance of multidrug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from the lungs of mice. —CA

Transformation in Smallholder Agriculture through Intensification in Ethiopia: Determinants and Implications
It is a challenge for a farmer with limited resources to decide on the production of commodities and investment in the farm. Transformation of smallholder subsistence agriculture, to market oriented value addition based agriculture is vital for poverty reduction in Ethiopia. This study was initiated to explore the factors which contribute for the adoption of improved wheat and pepper varieties ...
متن کاملFood insecurity of smallholder farming systems in B72A catchment in the Olifants River Basin, South Africa
Traditional smallholder farming systems are characterized by low yields and high risks of crop failure and food insecurity. Through a biophysical model, PARCHED-THIRST and a socio-economic farming systems simulation model, OLYMPE, we evaluated the performance of farming practices based on maize yield, gross margin and total family balance over a 10-year period in semi-arid Olifants River Basin ...
متن کاملDoes Participation in Farmer Field School Extension Program Improve Crop Yields? Evidence from Smallholder Tea Production Systems in Kenya
Agricultural Extension services are among the most important rural services in developing countries. The services are considered to be a key driver of technological change and productivity growth in agriculture. In Kenya, like in the rest of the developing economies, agricultural extension has largely been delivered through supply–driven approaches. Due to perceived low impact of agricultural e...
متن کاملMapping Cropland in Smallholder-Dominated Savannas: Integrating Remote Sensing Techniques and Probabilistic Modeling
Traditional smallholder farming systems dominate the savanna range countries of sub-Saharan Africa and provide the foundation for the region’s food security. Despite continued expansion of smallholder farming into the surrounding savanna landscapes, food insecurity in the region persists. Central to the monitoring of food security in these countries, and to understanding the processes behind it...
متن کاملA Workflow for Automated Satellite Image Processing: from Raw VHSR Data to Object-Based Spectral Information for Smallholder Agriculture
Earth Observation has become a progressively important source of information for land use and land cover services over the past decades. At the same time, an increasing number of reconnaissance satellites have been set in orbit with ever increasing spatial, temporal, spectral, and radiometric resolutions. The available bulk of data, fostered by open access policies adopted by several agencies, ...
