Terahertz Power-Combining with Coupled Oscillator Arrays

چکیده

A quasi-optical method for solid-state power-combining is discussed, with application to high-power millimeter-wave generation. The approach uses two-dimensional planar arrays of coupled oscillators. These arrays are distinguished by the strength of the coupling, which is limited to weak interactions. This simplifies both the analysis and design of the arrays. A theoretical description of the coupled-oscillator arrays is briefly discussed, along with experimental results for two prototype arrays using Gunn and MESFET devices at X-band. Experiments indicate that mutual synchronization of the elements is facilitated by using a quasi-optical reflector to control the inter-element coupling.

High-Power Radiation at 1 THz in Silicon: A Fully Scalable Array Using a Multi-Functional Radiating Mesh Structure

We introduce a highly scalable architecture of coherent harmonic oscillator array for high-power and narrowbeamwidth radiation in the mid-terahertz (THz) band. The array consists of horizontal and vertical slotlines (i.e., slot mesh) located at the boundaries between oscillator elements. Through such a structure, the following operations are achieved simultaneously: 1) maximum oscillation power...

Spoof surface plasmon polaritons in terahertz transmission through subwavelength hole arrays analyzed by coupled oscillator model

Both the localized resonance and excitation of spoof surface plasmon polaritons are observed in the terahertz transmission spectra of periodic subwavelength hole arrays. Analyzing with the coupled oscillator model, we find that the terahertz transmission is actually facilitated by three successive processes: the incident terahertz field first initiates the localized oscillation around each hole...

Integrated Antennas and Quasi-Optical Device Arrays - High Speed Semiconductor Devices and Circuits, 1995. Proceedings., IEEE/Cornell Conference on Adva

Integrated antennas have been the focus of increasing research activity, particularly for millimeterwave power combining and“quasi-optical” arrays. This paper reviews some of the work in integrated antennas for oscillator and amplifiers arrays carried out at UCSB. This includes unusual phenomena involving coupled-oscillator systems that have led to novel beam scanning concepts for cost-effectiv...

Experimental observation and simulation of mode-locking phenomena in coupled-oscillator arrays

Systems of coupled oscillators possess a wealth of interesting and useful nonlinear dynamical phenomena. Arrays of coupled oscillators have been used to model complicated biological and neural activity, and have proved useful in power-combining applications. The analysis of such arrays is difficult, and has generally been restricted to the case where all oscillators are synchronized to a common...

Design Considerations of an Active Integrated Antenna with Negative Resistance Transistor Oscillator

The design of an active integrated antenna with negative resistance transistor oscillator has been described. Simple but reasonably accurate analysis of oscillation start-up and steady state operating frequency prediction is presented. The active antenna prototype was manufactured and its operating frequency, EIRP and radiation patterns were measured. Two of these antennas were integrated in ac...
