چکیده

In this paper, we consider the problem of modeling machine availability in enterprise-area and wide-area distributed computing settings. Using availability data gathered from three different environments, we detail the suitability of four potential statistical distributions for each data set: exponential, Pareto, Weibull, and hyperexponential. In each case, we use software we have developed to determine the necessary parameters automatically from each

Wide-Area Real-Time Distributed Computing in a Tightly Managed Optical Grid - An Optiputer Vision

Wide area network (WAN) -based distributed computing (DC) has become an active field of research, especially under the label of grid computing. On the other hand, research on WAN-based real-time (RT) DC has remained in an embryonic stage. The situation is changing, however. Continuous increase in the availability of optical channels, called lambdas, along with steady decrease of their costs, ha...

A review of methods for resource allocation and operational framework in cloud computing

The issue of management and allocation of resources in cloud computing environments, according to the breadth of scale and modern technology implementation, is a complicated issue. Issues such as: the heterogeneity of resources, resource dependencies to each other, the dynamics of the environment, virtualization, workload diversity as well as a wide range of management objectives of cloud servi...

Quantifying Machine Availability in Networked and Desktop Grid Systems

In this paper, we examine the problem of predicting machine availability in desktop and enterprise computing environments. Predicting the duration that a machine will run until it restarts (availability duration) is critically useful to application scheduling and resource characterization in federated systems. We describe one parametric model fitting technique and two non-parametric prediction ...

P2P Network Trust Management Survey

Peer-to-peer applications (P2P) are no longer limited to home users, and start being accepted in academic and corporate environments. While file sharing and instant messaging applications are the most traditional examples, they are no longer the only ones benefiting from the potential advantages of P2P networks. For example, network file storage, data transmission, distributed computing, and co...

Automatic, Run-time and Dynamic Adaptation of Distributed Applications Executing in Virtual Environments Thesis Proposal

Over the last fifteen years we have seen a tremendous increase in computer and network speeds and performance, resulting in the emergence of a new computing paradigm, wide-area distributed computing. However, the full potential of wide-area distributed computing has not been exploited, primarily due to the challenges involved in developing applications for such environments. The wide fluctuatio...
