Diffeomorphic Surface Registration with Atrophy Constraints

چکیده
Diffeomorphic registration using optimal control on the diffeomorphism group and on shape spaces has become widely used since the development of the Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping (LDDMM) algorithm. More recently, a series of algorithms involving sub-riemannian constraints have been introduced, in which the velocity fields that control the shapes in the LDDMM framework are constrained in accordance with a specific deformation model. Here, we extend this setting by considering, for the first time, inequality constraints, in order to estimate surface deformations that only allow for atrophy, introducing for this purpose an algorithm that uses the augmented lagrangian method. We prove the existence of solutions of the associated optimal control problem, and the consistency of our approximation scheme. These developments are illustrated by numerical experiments on brain data.

Hippocampal Morphometry Study by Automated Surface Fluid Registration and Its Application to Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a severe and growing public health crisis. Efforts are underway to look for AD early detection in an efficient manner. Among all the AD biomarkers, hippocampal atrophy assessed on high-resolution T1-weighted MRI is the best established and validated. Hippocampal morphometry is increasingly used in the AD research, with modeling the hippocampus as a 3D parametric surf...
متن کاملHyperbolic Harmonic Brain Surface Registration with Curvature-Based Landmark Matching
Brain Cortical surface registration is required for inter-subject studies of functional and anatomical data. Harmonic mapping has been applied for brain mapping, due to its existence, uniqueness, regularity and numerical stability. In order to improve the registration accuracy, sculcal landmarks are usually used as constraints for brain registration. Unfortunately, constrained harmonic mappings...
متن کاملLandmark- and Intensity-Based Registration with Large Deformations via Quasi-conformal Maps
Registration, which aims to find an optimal one-to-one correspondence between different data, is an important problem in various fields. This problem is especially challenging when large deformations occur. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to obtain diffeomorphic image or surface registrations with large deformations via quasi-conformal maps. The basic idea is to minimize an energy f...
متن کاملDiffeomorphic cortical registration under manifold sulcal constraints
Brain mapping group investigation require spatial normalization across individuals. Here, we suggest to combine the benefits from 2 technical achievements to address this issue. First, the entire sulcal imprints of cortical surfaces are automatically extacted and simplified from T1-weighted MRI. Secondly, this sulcal information is introduced as measure-based landmarks into recent deformation t...
متن کاملEvaluation of a level-set based method for brain surface mapping
Objective The level set method using implicit representation has recently been developed and shown to be capable of matching curves of different shapes as well as other types of geometric objects (Liao et al., 2003). The method was evaluated in this study for its ability to match sulci on flattened 2D brain surfaces of individual subjects to a population average set of sulci to provide a diffeo...
