چکیده

[1] Airborne whole air samples collected over the western Pacific in spring, 2001 showed depletion of tetrachloroethene (C2Cl4) in every upper tropospheric (UT) air parcel that had interacted with large areas of cirrus less than three days upwind. The amount of C2Cl4 depletion showed a negative correlation with time since the interaction, consistent with the C2Cl4-depleted air parcels mixing with the ambient air as they moved downwind of the cirrus. Ethane and C2Cl4 both react relatively quickly with atomic chlorine (Cl) but ethane was not significantly depleted in these same air parcels, indicating that the C2Cl4 depletion cannot be attributed to Cl chemistry alone. Based on the minimum ethane depletion that can be detected by our measurements, a daytime upper limit of roughly 3 10 atom Cl cm 3 is indirectly estimated for heterogeneous chlorine activation by cirrus clouds in the UT in tropicaland mid-latitudes during spring.

Evidence of nitric acid uptake in warm cirrus anvil clouds during the NASA TC4 campaign

[1] Uptake of HNO3 onto cirrus ice may play an important role in tropospheric NOx cycling. Discrepancies between modeled and in situ measurements of gas‐phase HNO3 in the troposphere suggest that redistribution and removal mechanisms by cirrus ice have been poorly constrained. Limited in situ measurements have provided somewhat differing results and are not fully compatible with theory develope...

The impact of tropical convection and cirrus on upper tropospheric humidity: A Lagrangian analysis of satellite measurements

[1] Geostationary satellite observations are used in conjunction with an objective pattern-tracking algorithm to describe the Lagrangian evolution of convection, clouds and water vapor in the tropical upper troposphere. This analysis reveals that larger convective events within a Lagrangian air mass are associated with larger and longerlived cirrus anvil shields. Convective systems which genera...

Continental outflow from the US to the upper troposphere over the North Atlantic during the NASA INTEX-NA Airborne Campaign

A case of continental outflow from the United States (US) was examined using airborne measurements from NASA DC-8 flight 13 during the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment – North America (INTEXNA). Mixing ratios of methane (CH4) and carbon monoxide (CO) at 8–11 km altitude over the North Atlantic were elevated to 1843 ppbv and 134 ppbv respectively, while those of carbon dioxide (CO2...
