17. Data Report: Oligocene Paleoceanography of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean: Planktonic and Benthic Foraminifer Stable Isotope Results from Site 1218

چکیده
To document the evolution of the early cryosphere, stable isotope analyses were conducted on the planktonic and benthic foraminifers from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1218. We generated two parallel 54m-long records at 10-cm resolution and thus produced a standard Pacific stable isotope reference curve for the 26.4to 30.0-Ma interval within the Oligocene. These data are necessary to document the timing and magnitude of glacial events through the Oligocene. Pronounced variations are recorded in both planktonic and benthic foraminifer δ13C between +0.32‰ and +1.67‰ and –0.18‰ and +1.09‰, respectively. There is an overall increase in δ18O though the record, toward heavier values in the late Oligocene.

The biostratigraphy and paleobiology of Oligocene planktonic foraminifera from the equatorial Pacific Ocean (ODP Site 1218)
Planktonic foraminifera from a continuous Oligocene succession with clear magnetochronology and sediment cycles at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1218 (equatorial Pacific Ocean) were studied in the interval from 27 to 30 Ma. Paragloborotalia taxa are common and we examined their size, relative abundance, and stable isotopes. Multispecies stable isotope data indicate the depth habitats of Oligocene...
متن کاملEquatorial Pacific productivity changes near the EoceneOligocene boundary
There is general agreement that productivity in high latitudes increased in the late Eocene and remained high in the early Oligocene. Evidence for both increased and decreased productivity across the Eocene-Oligocene transition (EOT) in the tropics has been presented, usually based on only one paleoproductivity proxy and often in sites with incomplete recovery of the EOT itself. A complete reco...
متن کاملLate Eocene to early Miocene ice sheet dynamics and the global carbon cycle
[1] Paired benthic foraminiferal trace metal and stable isotope records have been constructed from equatorial Pacific Ocean Drilling Program Site 1218. The records include the two largest abrupt (<1 Myr) increases in the Cenozoic benthic oxygen isotope record: Oi-1 in the earliest Oligocene ( 34 Ma) and Mi-1 in the earliest Miocene ( 23 Ma). The paired Mg/Ca and oxygen isotope records are used ...
متن کاملExtended orbitally forced palaeoclimatic records from the equatorial Atlantic Ceara Rise
We extend existing high-resolution Oligocene–Miocene proxy records from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 154. The extended record spans the time interval from 17:86 to 26.5Ma. The data are age calibrated against a new astronomical solution that affords a reevaluation of the intricate interaction between orbital (‘‘Milankovitch’’) forcing of the climate and ocean system, and the fidelity with wh...
متن کاملInsights from the Paleogene tropical Pacific: Foraminiferal stable isotope and elemental results from Site 1209, Shatsky Rise
[1] Stable isotope and elemental measurements were conducted on foraminifera from a sequence of calcareous pelagic ooze at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1209 to document the thermal evolution of the North Pacific water column over Shatsky Rise and to address long-standing questions about the nature of oceanic circulation in the early Paleogene. A major change in seasonality and water column struc...
