One foot in the grave: zooplankton drift into the Westerschelde estuary (The Netherlands)
نویسنده
چکیده
The net growth rate of marine zooplankton entering the Westerschelde estuary was investigated using an advective-dispersive transport model that simulates zooplankton biomass behaving conservatively in the estuary. Total biomass of marine zooplankters in the Westerschelde was much lower than what would be expected based on transport alone, indicating negative growth rates in the estuary. Including a net consumption term in the transport model allowed the estimatio~i'of total net mortality. About 3 % of all marine zooplankters that enter the Westerschelde with the flood currents are retained in the estuary, where they die. On average, 5 % of the total marine zooplankton biomass in the estuary died per day. Each year a net amount of about 1500 t of zooplankton dry weight (DW) is imported from the sea to the estuary. Thus in the Westerschelde the marine zooplankton persists mainly due to continuous replenishment from the sea. Average net production/biomass rates of the major marine zooplankton species varied from -0.02 g DW (g DW)-' d-l (Temora longicornis) to -0.39 g DW (gDW)-' d-l (Pseudocalanus elongatus). In the estuary, the differential mortality of these species resulted in shifts in dominance within the zooplankton community relative to that in the sea. Possible causes of this zooplankton mortality are discussed.

متن کاملSpecies composition, diversity and distribution of Gelatinous Zooplankton (Cnidaria, Cetenophora and Thaliacea) from coastal/estuarine waters, North of Bushehr- Persian Gulf
Background and Objectives: ??? Methods: ??? Findings: ??? Conclusion: ??? In this survey, gelatinous zooplankton fauna from the coastal/estuarine waters, northern of Bushehr were analyzed during summer of 2017 to spring 2018. 5 species were identified for the first time from Persian Gulf, including 3 species from Hydromedusa, Eutima gegenbaueri, Eirene viridula and Clytia discoid, one spe...
متن کاملScaldiporia vandokkumi, a new pontoporiid (Mammalia, Cetacea, Odontoceti) from the Late Miocene to earliest Pliocene of the Westerschelde estuary (The Netherlands)
Background The family Pontoporiidae (Cetacea, Odontoceti, Inioidea) is currently represented in our oceans by just one species of diminutive dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei, franciscana). Although P. blainvillei is limited to coastal waters of the South Atlantic along Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, multiple Miocene and Pliocene fossils indicate the past presence of members of the family in the ...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Variation in Copepod Community in the Helleh River Estuary – South Coast of Iran, Persian Gulf
Copepods are the main zooplankton assemblages in most tropical and semi-tropical estuaries. In this research, copepod population dynamics were investigated in Helleh River estuary, Persian Gulf during four seasons beginning from summer 2011 to spring 2012. Samples were taken using plankton net with mesh size of 140 µm and vertical towing from 5 fixed-stations in mid-season. Results showed that...
متن کاملThe effects of a single freshwater release into the Kromme Estuary. 3: Estuarine zooplankton response
Natural patterns of zooplankton variability (temporal and spatial) in the Kromme Estuary have broken down due to persistent euhalinity (salinity values above 28‰) throughout the estuary. These conditions occur as a consequence of freshwater retention by a large reservoir. Only 2 x 10 m (<2% of the mean annual runoff (MAR) from the catchment) is allocated to the estuary per annum, and the presen...
