Precision charging of microparticles in plasma via the Rayleigh instability for evaporating charged liquid droplets

چکیده
In this paper we describe a novel method for delivering a precise, known amount of electric charge to a micron-sized solid target. Aerosolised microparticles passed through a plasma discharge will acquire significant electric charge. The fluid stability under evaporative stress is a key aspect that is core to the research. Initially stable charged aerosols subject to evaporation (i.e. a continually changing radius) may encounter the Rayleigh stability limit. This limit arises from the electrostatic and surface tension forces and determines the maximum charge a stable droplet can retain, as a function of radius. We demonstrate that even if the droplet charge is initially much less than the Rayleigh limit, the stability limit will be encountered as the droplet evaporates. The instability emission mechanism is strongly linked to the final charge deposited on the target, providing a mechanism that can be used to ensure a predictable charge deposit on a known encapsulated microparticle. & 2016 The Authors. Generation of charged droplets by field ionization of liquid helium
Positively charged helium droplets were produced by ionization of liquid helium in an electrostatic spraying experiment, in which fluid emerging from a thin glass capillary was ionized by applying a high voltage to a needle inside the capillary. At 2.2 K, fine droplets (<10 μm in diameter) were produced in pulsed sprays or showers with total currents as high as 0.4 μA at relatively low voltages...

We have developed a method of biochemical patterning which allows for micro and nano-scale resolution on non-planar substrates. In this method, bio molecules (including DNA) are delivered to charged locations on surfaces by charged water buffer droplets. Charging of water droplets is accomplished using Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma. DBD was effectively stabilized in the presence of ...

متن کاملA genetic algorithm-based approach for numerical solution of droplet status after Coulomb fission using the energy
As a droplet moves, due to evaporation at the surface, the droplet size is gradually reduced. Due to decreasing the size of the droplets moving in the spray core, the surface charges become closer and the repulsive force between the charges increases. When the Coulombic force overcomes the surface tension force (Rayleigh instability) the droplet breaks into smaller droplets (Coulomb fission). T...
