Bioabsorbable plate cranial base reconstruction.

چکیده
INTRODUCTION During endoscopic anterior skull base surgery, reconstruction options for defects of the sella turcica or anterior cranial base require careful consideration of defect size, shape, location, and need for adjuvant therapy. A variety of techniques are available, ranging from single layer reconstruction to multilayer reconstruction with microvascular tissue transfer. Each method has particular advantages and disadvantages with regard to effectiveness, morbidity, vascularity, and strength. Addition of a rigid component to the reconstruction may be considered, particularly if there is concern regarding the integrity of the repair. Rigid materials include local tissue, such as septal or sphenoid bone; distant tissue, such as contoured mastoid cortical bone; or artificial materials. We review our experience using a recently developed semirigid bioabsorbable implant for repair of a variety of skull base defects.

متن کاملDelayed Cavernous Carotid Artery Pseudoaneurysm Caused by Absorbable Plate Following Transsphenoidal Surgery: Case Report and Review of the Literature
Background Bioabsorbable plates are frequently utilized in the repair of skull base defects following transsphenoidal operations. Traumatic intracranial pseudoaneurysms are a rare complication of transsphenoidal surgery. To date, iatrogenic carotid pseudoaneurysm associated with the use of an absorbable plate has been reported once. Results A 57-year-old man with a large nonfunctional pituitary...

INTRODUCTION The pursuit of bone fixation systems capable of affording appropriate stability for osteosynthesis has gone through several stages from the use of metal wires, plates, and screws to the current stage of bioabsorbable systems. In our Pediatric Neurosurgery Service and Craniofacial Surgery Unit we began employing these systems in June 1997. The object of this paper is to present a re...
متن کاملThin-plate spline analysis of the cranial base in subjects with Class III malocclusion.
The role of the cranial base in the emergence of Class III malocclusion is not fully understood. This study determines deformations that contribute to a Class III cranial base morphology, employing thin-plate spline analysis on lateral cephalographs. A total of 73 children of European-American descent aged between 5 and 11 years of age with Class III malocclusion were compared with an equivalen...
متن کاملMinimally invasive endoscopic pericranial flap: a new method for endonasal skull base reconstruction.
OBJECTIVES One of the major challenges of cranial base surgery is reconstruction of the dural defect. Following a craniofacial resection, the standard reconstructive technique is direct suture repair of the dural defect with a fascial graft and rotation of an anteriorly based pericranial scalp flap to cover the dura. The introduction of endoscopic techniques and an endonasal approach to the ven...
