ISPC Commentary on proposal CRP 5: Water, Land and Ecosystems

ثبت نشده
چکیده

CRP5 focuses on three critical issues: water scarcity, land degradation and ecosystem services. It seeks to differentiate itself from cropand systems-based CRPs by addressing natural resource constraints at a river basin and landscape scale rather than the field to farm level. Underpinning this CRP is the understanding that sustainable natural resource management is a prerequisite for poverty alleviation and food security over the long term. To achieve its goal, CRP5 has a broad vision and an ambitious agenda that includes research components spread across a wide spectrum of disciplines, scales and geographic contexts. It involves an impressive number of partnerships involving CGIAR Centers, other CRPs, NARES, NGOs, universities and government and international agencies.

In its commentary on the original version of CRP5, the ISPC recognized the fundamental importance and potential of this CRP to fill a critical gap in the CGIAR research for development portfolio. The rationale remains compelling for a coordinated international research effort on water scarcity, land degradation and threats to ecosystem sustainability related to agriculture – focusing on researc...

ISPC Commentary on the Revised Proposal for CRP 4: Agriculture for Improved Nutrition & Health

In recognition that CRP4 represents a new initiative within the CGIAR, the proponents call for a startup phase of one year (which will effectively be 2012 rather than 2011) and reprioritization of the program in year 4 (Table 22). The ISPC recommends that the revised CRP 4 proposal be approved subject to further revisions to be addressed during the implementation phase taking into account the f...

ISPC Commentary on Revised CRP 3.5: Grain Legumes

In previous commentaries on earlier submissions of CRP 3.5, the ISPC highlighted the need to strengthen justification for a CRP on grain legumes (GLs) and the approach used to prioritize across crop species, regions and constraints in the context of delivering impact. Issues related to narrowing the focus (fewer product lines), clearer articulation and justification of impact pathways and more ...

ISPC Commentary on the proposal CRP 3

The ISPC reviewed CRP 3.6 on Dryland Cereals in parallel with CRP 3.5 (on grain legumes) and noted many similarities in the basic characteristics of the programs and in their management and governance construct. Both CRPs are led by ICRISAT, and both propose research on a set of crops that are in the CGIAR Centers’ current research portfolio. In addition, both are similar in having to rationali...
