Truthful Approximation Mechanisms for Restricted Combinatorial Auctions

چکیده
When attempting to design a truthful mechanism for a computationally hard problem such as combinatorial auctions, one is faced with the problem that most efficiently computable heuristics can not be embedded in any truthful mechanism (e.g. VCG-like payment rules will not ensure truthfulness). We develop a set of techniques that allow constructing efficiently computable truthful mechanisms for combinatorial auctions in the special case where only the valuation is unknown by the mechanism (the single parameter case). For this case we extend the work of Lehmann O’Callaghan, and Shoham, who presented greedy heuristics, and show how to use IF-THENELSE constructs, perform a partial search, and use the LP relaxation. We apply these techniques for several types of combinatorial auctions, obtaining truthful mechanisms with provable approximation ratios.

A The Computational Complexity of Truthfulness in Combinatorial Auctions
Is it possible to design truthful polynomial-time mechanisms that achieve a good approximation ratio? This is one of the basic questions in Algorithmic Mechanism Design. The focus of most of the work on this question is on settings in which on one hand there exists a truthful algorithm that maximizes the social welfare (VCG), but on the other hand computing the optimal solution is computational...
متن کاملTowards a Characterization of Truthful Combinatorial Auctions
This paper analyzes implementable social choice functions (in dominant strategies) over restricted domains of preferences, the leading example being combinatorial auctions. Our work generalizes the characterization of Roberts (1979) who showed that truthful mechanisms over unrestricted domains with at least 3 possible outcomes must be “affine maximizers”. We show that truthful mechanisms for co...
متن کاملGreedy Mechanism Design for Truthful Combinatorial Auctions
We study the combinatorial auction problem, in which a set of objects are to be distributed amongst selfish bidders with the goal of maximizing social welfare. We consider mechanisms that apply greedy algorithms, and ask to what extent truthful greedy mechanisms can find approximate solutions to the combinatorial auction problem. We associate the notion of greediness with a broad class of algor...
متن کاملTruthful Risk-Managed Combinatorial Auctions
Given a winning-bid withdrawal in a combinatorial auction, finding an alternative repair solution of adequate revenue without causing undue disturbance to the remaining winning bids in the original solution may be difficult or even impossible. This “bid-takers exposure problem” may be preemptively addressed by finding a solution that is robust to winning-bid withdrawal. We introduce the concept...
متن کاملNear-Optimal Approximation Mechanisms for Multi-Unit Combinatorial Auctions
We design and analyze deterministic truthful approximation mechanisms for multi-unit combinatorial auctions involving a constant number of distinct goods, each in arbitrary limited supply. Prospective buyers (bidders) have preferences over multisets of items, i.e., for more than one unit per distinct good, that are expressed through their private valuation functions. Our objective is to determi...
