A Resumé of Some of the More Important Facts Relating to Indian Cholera

The great dependence of cholera for its diffusion on local conditions and seasonal changes has always been a characteristic of the disease. It prefers low-lying districts, seaports and riverbanks, and this preference is as much marked in Asia as in Europe. The health resorts on the range of the Himalayas are seldom affected with cholera, though the disease is imported frequently. The tea-gardens also on the slopes of the mountains do not suffer uuless cholera is imported, and then, as a general rule, not severely. But this rule has its exceptions. The Valley of Kashmir which suffered in 1892 from a severe visitation of cholera is ahout 5,200 feet above the level of the sea, and separated from the Punjab by a range of mountains varying from 9,000 to 15,000 feet in height, and is of such breadth that to cross it a journey on foot takes from six to eight days.
