An association between Wernicke's encephalopathy and thyrotoxicosis.

چکیده
THE SYNDROME bearing Wernicke's name was first documented by Gayet (1875). Wernicke (1881) described three cases, two occurring in chronic alcoholics, the other following sulphuric acid poisoning. Wechsler (1932) appears to be the first person to associate this encephalopathy with a vitamin deficiency. Jolliffe, Wortis & Fein (1941) and Campbell & Russell (1941) have described many cases, the majority occurring in alcoholics. The disorders which have been associated with Wernicke's encephalopathy are chronic alcoholism, carcinoma of the stomach, gastritis, pyloric stenosis, chronic dyspepsia, peritonitis, hyperemesis gravidarum, pernicious anaemia, syphilis and bronchiectasis (Campbell & Russell, 1941). This report describes the previously unrecorded association between Wernicke's encephalopathy and thyrotoxicosis.

Unusual Presentation of Uncommon Disease: Anorexia Nervosa Presenting as Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome—A Case Report from Southeast Asia
Anorexia nervosa presenting as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is rare. The causes of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome are multiple like alcohol abuse, thyrotoxicosis, haemodialysis, severe malnutrition because of gastric carcinoma and pyloric obstruction, hyperemesis gravidarum, and prolonged parenteral feeding. We report a case of anorexia nervosa, who presented with Wernicke's encephalopathy and prog...
متن کاملThe incidence of Wernicke's encephalopathy in Australia--a neuropathological study of 131 cases.
In a nine year necropsy study in Western Australia, the incidence of Wernicke's encephalopathy was 2.8%. The incidence appears to be increasing. Although Wernicke's encephalopathy is a nutritional disorder, the majority of cases occur in the alcoholic population. Only 20% of the 131 cases studied had been diagnosed clinically as Wernicke's encephalopathy. This large discrepancy between numbers ...
متن کاملWernicke's encephalopathy with visual loss in a patient with hyperemesis gravidarum.
OBJECTIVE We describe a case of Wernicke's encephalopathy associated with visual loss that was caused by hyperemesis gravidarum. METHODS A 25 year old lady in her 20th week of her pregnancy consulted us. She had history of nausea and vomiting for 3 months with resultant weight loss. She now presented with sub-acute onset of visual loss in both her eyes, and gait disturbance with unsteadiness....
متن کاملOperational criteria for the classification of chronic alcoholics: identification of Wernicke's encephalopathy.
OBJECTIVES To establish better operational criteria for the diagnosis of Wernicke's encephalopathy. Current criteria for diagnosing Wernicke's encephalopathy require the presence of three clinical signs (oculomotor abnormalities, cerebellar dysfunction, and an altered mental state), although it has often been reported that most patients do not fulfil all these criteria. METHODS The clinical h...
متن کاملMammillothalamic functional connectivity and memory function in Wernicke's encephalopathy.
There is still debate over the neural mechanisms underlying pathogenic and even recovery processes of Wernicke's encephalopathy. Therefore, we attempted to validate the usefulness of resting-state functional connectivity analysis in assessing memory function and its neural correlation with the mammillothalamic tract in patients recovering from Wernicke's encephalopathy. Seven chronic alcoholics...
