چکیده

he efficiency of photosynthesis continues to interest biochemists, biologists, and plant physiologists. Scientists interested in CO2 uptake are concerned about the extent to which the uptake rate is limited by such factors as stomatal diffusion and the chemistry of the CO2 absorption process. The fractionation of carbon isotopes that occurs during photosynthesis is one of the most useful techniques for investigating the efficiency of CO2 uptake. Atmospheric carbon dioxide contains approximately 1.1% of the nonradioactive isotope carbon-13 and 98.9% of carbon-12. During photosynthesis, plants discriminate against C because of small differences in chemical and physical properties imparted by the difference in mass. This discrimination can be used to assign plants to various photosynthetic groups. The isotope fractionation also reflects limitations on photosynthetic efficiency imposed by the various diffusional and chemical components of CO2 uptake. When analyzed in detail, this fractionation provides information .about water use efficiency and indicates that different strategies are needed for improving wateruse efficiency in different kinds of plants. Isotope fractionation in simple physical and chemical processes is well understood and is commonly Current studies include

Short-term measurement of carbon isotope fractionation in plants.

Combustion-based studies of the carbon-13 content of plants give only an integrated, long-term value for the isotope fractionation associated with photosynthesis. A method is described here which permits determination of this isotope fractionation in 2 to 3 hours. To accomplish this, the plant is enclosed in a glass chamber, and the quantity and isotopic content of the CO(2) remaining in the at...

Radius Dependence of Hydrogen Storage Inside Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes in an Array

In this study, we have investigated radius dependence of hydrogen storage within armchair (n,n) single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) in a square arrays. To this aim, we have employed equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Our simulations results reveal that radius of carbon nanotubes are an important and influent factor in hydrogen distribution inside carbon nanotubes and consequentl...

Studying Short-Time Dynamics of Vegetation and Soil Organic Carbon in a Semi-arid Rangeland (Case Study: Zharf, Khorasan Province, Iran)

Abstract. Rangeland vegetation dynamics encompass all processes of changes in vegetation composition and structure over time. Investigating the rangeland ecosystem dynamics makes it possible to determine the effects of climatic and management conditions on qualitative and quantitative changes of the vegetation in a specific period of time. Accordingly, data collection and measurements for evalu...

Density fractionation and C reveal changes in soil carbon following woody encroachment in a desert ecosystem

Woody encroachment has dramatically changed land cover patterns in arid and semiarid systems (drylands) worldwide over the past 150 years. This change is known to influence bulk soil carbon (C) pools, but the implications for dynamics and stability of these pools are not well understood. Working in a Chihuahuan Desert C4 grassland encroached by C3 creosote bush (Larrea tridentata), we used two ...
