چکیده

Emergence and survival of adults for 24 hwas compared forTrichogramma chilonis Ishii reared on eggs of Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) adults whose larval growth and development had beenmonitored on broken grains of four different cereals: Þngermillet (Eleusine coracanaL.Gaertn), softwhitewheat (TriticumaestivumL), short-grainedwhite rice (Oryza sativaL.), anddurra sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench). For C. cephalonica, the percentage adult emergence and several Þfth-instar food use indices (consumption index, relative growth rate, and efÞciencies of conversion of ingested and digested food) were signiÞcantly higher for millet-reared than for sorghum-reared larvae. The nutritional indices for wheatand rice-reared C. cephalonica larvae were intermediate between the indices for larvae reared on millet and sorghum. The percentage adult emergence and percentage 24-h survival of T. chiloniswere signiÞcantly higher on eggs of C. cephalonica hosts reared on millet than on eggs of those reared on sorghum. These results suggest that the rearing of C. cephalonica larvae on a high-quality nutritional source resulted in high-quality eggs, which ultimately resulted in high-quality T. chilonis reared on those eggs. Such an effect has been modeled in ecological theory as a “bottom up cascade.” Improved knowledge of the nutritional ecology of parasitoids and hosts can lead to improved understanding of the ecological mechanisms affecting host plant, host, and parasitoid abundance, as well as to improved efÞciency and quality of Trichogramma production in mass rearing programs.

Intraguild predation on Trichogramma chilonis Ishii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) by the generalist predator Geocoris ochropterus Fieber (Hemiptera: Geocoridae)

Intraguild predation (IGP) is common in food web when two natural enemies share the same resources and prey. It may affect the success or failure of a biological control attempt. The role of intraguild predation by Geocoris ochropterus Fieber (Heteroptera: Geocoridae) on Trichogramma chilonis Ishii (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) developed on eggs of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera:...

Temperature-Dependent Development and Oviposition Behavior of Trichogramma ostriniae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), a Potential Biological Control Agent for the European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

Trichogramma ostriniae Pang and Chen (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was reared continuously for seven generations on its native host, the Asian corn borer,Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). It took 6.7 d at 33 C and 20 d at 17 C from oviposition to adult emergence with no differences between sexes. Several theoretic models were used to Þt the temperature-dependent growth c...

Selection of Effective Species or Strains of Trichogramma Egg Parasitoids of Diamondback Moth

Twenty-seven Trichogramma and Trichogrammatoidea species or strains of different origin were tested on diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella (L.)) for host acceptance and host suitability. The experiments were conducted at 27 ± 2oC and 75-90% RH. Depending on their initial parasitization activity, the number of offspring produced and emergence ratio, 18 Trichogramrna species were identified as ...

Biocontrol efficacy and viability of Trichogramma chilonis on Corcyra cephalonica and Spodoptera litura under laboratory conditions

Trichogramma, an egg parasitoid can be used in controlling many lepidopteran pests. Therefore, it is necessary to demonstrate the capacity of these natural enemies in controlling the pest population so as to use them in biological control programs against the pest. Such an attempt was made in this particular study, where the parasitization rate of Trichogramma chilonis was tested on the eggs of...

Morphology and distribution of antennal multiporous gustatory sensilla related to host recognition in some Trichogramma spp

Trichogramma spp. (Hymenoptera Trichogrammatidae) are endoparasitic wasps that attack the eggs of mainly Lepidoptera species. The morphology of the antennal multiporous gustatory sensilla of five Trichogramma species is studied and compared: Trichogramma cacoeciae Marchal, Trichogramma chilonis Ishii, Trichogramma dendrolimi Matsumura, Trichogramma turkestanica Meyer, and Trichogramma sibericum...
